Dems Kill GOP Law Allowing Big-Game Hunts On Park Service Land
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061115/ap_on_go_co/congress_island

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted Tuesday to repeal a new law allowing big-game hunts to continue on a California public island in defiance of the National Park Service and a federal court settlement.

The measure was added by California Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to a military construction spending bill being completed by the Senate during Congress' lame-duck session. It was approved by voice vote without debate.

The Feinstein-Boxer measure would overturn language about big game on Santa Rosa Island that was part of a defense programs bill signed by President Bush last month.

That provision, written by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., overturned a federal court settlement mandating that nonnative deer and elk on Santa Rosa Island be removed by 2011. Under the settlement, privately run hunts on the public island off the coast of Santa Barbara, part of Channel Islands National Park, were also supposed to end that year.

7. What "Big Game" Is Hunted On A California Island?
Sounds to me like somebody is blowing something out of proportion.

Did you ever wonder why people call "Bullshit" on some things?

The are no lions, bears, moose, or other "Big Game" on any California island that I know of. Please enlighten me as to what it is they are hunting, because its sure not anything the hunting world would recognized as big game.

8. elk and deer - non-native
"Santa Rosa used to be a private cattle ranch owned by the Vail-Vickers Co. for 100 years. But the owners sold the island to the federal government for $30 million in 1986 and continue to operate a commercial elk-and deer-hunting business there called Multiple Use Managers Inc. The contract is expected to expire in December 2011.".....

12. Our good ole boys in our county,
also took over a public area for private hunting purposes. I don't think they stocked it with non-native prey, but one guy said he witnessed a sheriff helicopter being used to radio in the prey's location to the connected good ole boys on the ground.

I believe him, because this shit happens all the time in my county.

14. What interest does the state have then?
You know, sometimes our side goes too far. If the deal was cut, the deal has a limited life, and the deal was and continues to be legal, then what business is it of anyone to now make that same business illegal?

This one riles me.

I do not believe that private interest should take precedent over public good but this is absurd.

9. Sorry, big game trophy hunters, but not on public land.
How obnoxious was it that this was added to a defense program bill in the first place?

11. Wow! Talk about a quick response!
Just be careful, though, because now that they can't use the land to hunt, the Repubs might think of a way to take it over and develop.

15. Duncan Hunter vows to fight on.
He's a hardheaded 'pug, isn't he.

The Santa Rosa Island provision still has to get through
a House-Senate conference committee, but this is a good start.

This was obviously a law passed to the benefit of a few dozen ultra rich blood thirsty Republicans. Get off our land assholes!!!!
