14. : ) That's what I was going to say.
Trent Lott was "let go" on the ruse of what he said to Strom Thurmond, but REALLY it was because he worked too closely with the Democrats He was more willing to "reach across the aisle" and as we witnessed after Frist took over, THAT WAS THE LAST THING THIS ADMINISTRATION WANTED.. He wasn't a player in the cabal's little game.

13. Maybe the repubs are looking
for some good old fashion lynchings in the Senate. Then there is nobody better for the whip position than Lott.

Dem hands. That's great news for 2008 as the two sides will be fighting big time. The MSNBC discussion on now says this hurts Bush.

26. some amusing comments from AmericaBlog commenters:
How sad is it that it actually feels like a step UP to have Trent Lott back, who is "only" a white supremacist?

lott likes the idea of being able to say 'minority' and 'whip' in the same sentence

I propose we let the extreme right AND left wings be given Louisville Sluggers and a small town, say the size of Bakersfield, to roam around and beat the living tar out of each other.
Now that would be my kind of reality TeeVee

Good...the Repub Party just proved in the last election that it is basically a Southern Party.....with Lott at #2 that only serves to diminish the conservative ideology of hate and extremism even further....the GOP will die a slow death if they continue to embrace their extremist base....(this is a good first step towards that and will only benefit DEMS!!!)

Not that I am a Trent Lott fan by any means, but, as Senate minority and majority leader, he was a good leader and ran circles around Bill Frist -- and was NOT a pissy pants.
NoMoreBush | 11.15.06 - 11:15 am | #

I'm as Blue State as they come, but I think we ought to let this one rest. Lott said something stupid, he apologized, he paid a pretty bad price, and that was that. He was pretty good as a Majority Leader working with Clinton, behind the scenes of course, in that he (unlike his successor, Frist) was able to actually pass legislation. And, as Republicans go these days, he's pretty inoffensive (next to, say, Inhofe, or Corkrer). We all love kicking the bad guys around, but I say we aim our fire elsewhere.

(I love this one:)

Am I the only one who thinks the old guard like Lott, Armey, and Barr are not nearly as bad as the Frists and Santorums were? Hell, after 6 years of Bush I find Pat Buchanan bordering on reasonable.

And I'm all for that. If Lott attempts bipartisanship, I'm all for that too. It's all a win for Democrats.
