Murtha: Dem Ethics & Lobbying Reform Bill is Crap
Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) told a group of Democratic moderates on Tuesday that an ethics and lobbying reform bill being pushed by party leaders was “total crap,” but said that he would work to enact the legislation because Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) supports it.

Murtha and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) are locked in a battle for the House Majority Leader post, and both men made presentations for to the Blue Dog Coalition on Tuesday in a bid for their votes.

“Even though I think it’s total crap, I’ll vote for it and pass it because that’s what Nancy wants,” Murtha told the Blue Dogs, according to three sources who were at the meeting. . . .

Murtha office’s did not comment for for this article.

1. Murtha opposes the war.
Other than that, he is a total dimwit.

There are other people that opposed the war too, Nancy.

5. Steny Hoyer is setting up his own K Street
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 01:59 PM by Robbien
He even had a taxpayer supported website outlining how he was going about establishing his own little lobbyist cabal.

Murtha and Hoyer are both seriously flawed. Pelosi had to chose one of the two.

12. Pelosi did not have to!!
If these guys are only in it for the money they don't deserve the job.

The people of this country don't want more of the same from the other party.

They voted for change!!

13. guessing.....the former, he is "old school" for sure
I can't imagine what the newly elected Dems, sitting in that meeting, thought about him, and by association, Pelosi. And, Hoyer is no better...wish we had a clean, anti-war, 3rd candidate.

9. The best way out is for Nancy Pelosi to withdraw her support for Murtha...
...but not endorse Hoyer, either. It will a) register her displeasure at the comment, b) help to re-establish her authority as someone not to be trifled with, c) give her an opportunity to prove that she's committed to democracy within the Democratic party by accepting whomever the party chooses as majority leader, and d) show her to be the impartial person I believe she is -- stern but fair.

11. Maybe you're right. Perhaps a quieter way of handliing it would be more useful.
Still, something inside me wants her to kick some ass right off the starting block, and build her street cred.

14. It Would Be Best If Both Withdrew Their Nomination
They are both compromised and if neither got the job there would be less hard feelings...
