blogs gathered, people gathered, we had another experience on gathering and fighting. we learned something here. we will jsut keep getting better. it toook time for us to get here. it will take time to get us out. hug that child, you know, know, you wont give up for your daughter. i know i wont. i had conversation with my boys about this this morning. i told them, we might lose, but dont be afraid. we are aware, i know what is up, i am doing what i need to do to make sure they are safe. this isnt my lesson, or their lesson, this is for the people who dont know.

sometimes all must crumble before we can rebuild.

we have dems.... we have voice. people arent done here.

41. You know, I heard that same argument from my Repub bro-in-law...
It was about the Iraq war.

"It's just a strong-arm tactic. Bush is just using a military show of force to get them to comply! He would never actually invade Iraq. What a foreign relations disaster that would be!"

Right. Or just perhaps these goons are as evil as they look...

I hope to God I'm wrong, and you are right... but I ain't holdin' my breath!

She'll find out soon enough. No more birth control, no more right to terminate a pregnancy, wanted or unwanted. No more rights for women.

God help her should she become disabled. Then she'll really know what it has become. How sick it all is, and WE fought so hard for that right to choose and now one stupid assh*le gets a position of power and we know what his agenda is.

What a sick bastard. :(

19. awww, my daughter and i hugged too.
she came home early from school today to help me make phone calls to senators. (she's almost 18 years old) she was great! she called over and over when the circuts were busy--she talked to staffers, left messages, i put up posts if a staffer told her a tidbit, i was on the other phone line and faxing on the third phone line.

and then...this....

we turned off the tv (and missed boxer unfortunately) and took a walk. i haven't been outside for days--obsessing over this, (i was on the phone till after 3 am this morning--i called 99 senators --that was my third, fourth or fifth time)

and my daughter's been helping me, trying to explain to her friends--a lot of kids who are republican by way of parent--about this, the importance, about alito (and these other kids say: who? why is he bad? they have no clue because their sheeple parents have no clue)

and so we walked and walked. the biting air felt good, it was rather dreary, and a light snow was falling. frozen tears from the sky no doubt.

she tells me later if things don't work out in the career she hopes to have she's decided on a second career. i give up. what? she says...a politician! i laughed. well, i told her, "i think you're a good hearted person, fair and open-minded, honest, and i raised you right. hell, i'll vote for you!"

(whether it happens or not: that's my girl! so proud of her...and we all tried so hard--you, me, all these progressives, everyone at du tried, to make the world better for my daughter and your daughter, and everyone. sigh. at least no one can say we didn't try.)

--sorry for rambeling so much.
i cried when i got home. when my daughter went into her room. when i was alone. i cried too.

35. Abortion WON'T be made illegal by the US government
The most the fundies can hope for is to overturn Roe v. Wade, which guarantees a woman's right to choose. Granted some Red states will likely ban abortion. But most Blue states already have abortion protections built into their state constitutions.

The right wing uses the abortion issue as a wedge to separate poor people from their own self-interests. The wedge will go away and there will be a groundswell of opposition to the republican party, even among people who are presently Republican themselves. The onus will move from the courts to the asshole politicans who got us into this mess in the first place.

People who support choice will easily be able to raise the funds necessary to make sure than any woman who wants an abortion in a fundie state gets first class jet service, counseling support services and a 5 star hotel free of charge to a Blue state with abortion access.

In crisis comes opportunity. There IS a bright side to the madness.

37. Want to bet?
Imagine a Federal law declaring the termination of any human life- human as defined by genetic code- murder.

POOF. *All* abortion is illegal. And they have the Congress to pass it.

See, the problem with your reasoning and that of those like you (and I do NOT mean that disrespectfully, by the way, even though that may be how it sounds) is that you do not know how incredibly self-entitled these people are. They are the sort that would, say, give an IOU as a birthday gift- and then refuse to follow through, even more than a decade later. I should know; my mom is a republican and that's exactly what she did to me- among many other things, all typically Republican, and all insanely destructive to me, her son. It's been more than ten years since I moved away for good- and that, not even all that far!- and everything she did is still with me.

She doesn't care, and neither do people like her. These are souls which, for whatever reason, are absolutely incapable of seeing beyond themselves and their own "type". They have no interest in helping you or me, or in allowing us to live as we please, because in their minds, those things take away from them.

They do not see good works as "giving to others", and that's why that message from us to them doesn't sink in. They see "giving to others" as "taking from self", and they always have to first "look out for #1." They are more important to them than any other; every social or financial transaction must be, always, looked at in a risk/reward way, also known as "what's in it for me?"

For religious Republicans, this mindset extends into their religion; these sorts include their religion in everything they do- and apply their religion to everyone else. Again, this has nothing to do with faith or belief, but rather in a "your behavior takes away from the glory of my god" kind of way. Once again, we see the "look out for #1" mindset, in this case, their religion.

Allowing you your religious freedom takes away from their god. Go take a look at the witchvox.com news and comments; you'll often see cases of intimidation by authorities of pagans- and almost always by "christians".

This is going to only get worse. The only way the people of this country will wake up and see what has happened is when things get so bad they start to affect them daily. In other words, we're fucked until the country completely falls apart.

39. *ahem* OHIO has a lawsuit just waiting to make abortion ILLEGAL.
It will make abortion ILLEGAL and it will be ILLEGAL for anyone who's pregnant to go to a state where it IS legal. Women who are poor are going to die from self abortions, dirty abortions and going to hacks who don't know what they're doing (probably republicans). This will set our country back over 30 years. By the time these people, rat bastards, are out of office, we'll be living the 1950s all over again.:( The women's movement for women's rights was a LONG HARD BATTLE. NONE OF IT came easily.

51. US escaped thalidomide disaster b/c of careful FDA person
Frances Kelsey

Before thalidomide was banned worldwide in the 1960s, more than 10,000 babies were born with serious deformities. Most of the children were born in Europe, where thalidomide was readily available, but there were also hundreds of others born with birth defects in Canada and in the Caribbean. The only country to escape the tragedy was the United States. Only 17 thalidomide babies were ever born here because an FDA named Frances Kelsey didn't like some of the neurological research she saw on the drug back in 1960, and she refused to let it on the market.

I am not that young, but I am male. I live in Massachusetts, where there is no risk that abortion will be made illegal.

Ohio is beyond hope on just about everything. I lived there for a few years and they were among the worst years of my life. I've never been exposed to such narrow-minded, mean-spirited bigotry before or since.

You speak of a "lawsuit" in Ohio? Do you mean a proposed law? It sounds blatantly unconstitutional to me. These guys, Roberts and Alito, are conservative, but they are both respected legal scholars (I know I'm inviting flames by laying it out like that, but I know a liberal Dem who is an attorney in NJ, has worked with Alito and has said as much), and hence they value the concept of precedent, and precedent is in favor of abortion rights. I can't honestly see either of them voting against precedent on this issue.

To me the real danger with these guys is with rulings that have no precedent, mostly involving anti-trust legislation and corporate power, and rulings that have anachronistic precedent, as with executive authority during time of war.

Of course, being 1) male, and 2) a resident of the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I can afford to be somewhat relaxed about the matter. Of course, I moved to Massachusetts for a reason: Unlike most other states in our country, it's not inhabited by a significant percentage of fascists.

And yes, people tend to be smarter here.

From my personal experience, I've found that the average cashier in Massachusetts is smarter than someone with a graduate degree in Florida. Of course, the average cashier in Mass. probably has a graduate degree.

I'm sorry to all the women out there that I may have offended and I'm sorry this guy is in the court, especially since I believe the fascists stole the election in the first place.

54. Proposed Law is what I mean and that's what they will try to do.
HOW they think they can monitor every pregnant woman... where she goes, what she does, whether she has an abortion or not, if she had an abortion, where did she have it?, was it an abortion or a miscarriage?, what out of state doctor did she visit? when did she have it? why did she have it?...is beyond me. But, that is where they will take Roe v. Wade with this SCOTUS.

ScAlito was nominated because of his stance on Roe. He was asked, POINT BLANK, "Do you consider Roe v. Wade to be settled law?" and the man REFUSED to answer that question. That told me exactly what he planned on doing to Roe. Roberts answered it. Why not ScAlito? He's a danger no matter how you look at him and so is Roberts. Roberts has already voted with Scalia and Thomas to overturn the euthanasia law in Oregon?, was it? AFTER stating in his hearing that he supported the right to privacy. THEY ARE LIARS. They are both Federalists. They were both GROOMED by the Federalist society for the last 25 years to get them on the SCOTUS. The religious RW wacko nut jobs supported them BOTH....that's all I need to know. Mark my word, by the time ScAlito and Roberts are finished chipping away at Roe, it will be a shell of what it is. Women will suffer and die at their hands. All those years of fighting for Roe will be wiped away with the stroke of their pens.
