Someone tried to save my soul last night
I do so love an opportunity to get preached to. I have to hand it to this particular evangelical, in just an 8 minute taxi ride he managed to segway from polite conversation into a pitch for me accepeting christ. It went a little like this:

Customer: "So don't you get really tired driving for 12 hours"

Me: "I'm usually ok as long as were busy. That being said if you ride with me about 4am you probably are doing so at your own risk, but then again most of what we do in life is a risk."

Customer (now waving a bible he had in his hand at me): "Well this here isn't a risk. Salvation isn't a risk."

Me:"No offense sir but been there, done that, used to wear the t-shirt"

Customer:"So you know about this then you know that Jesus is the only way to salvation"

Me:"Yeah, well there are several schools of thought on that one"

Customer:"Well that's the problem, people started to think when they should just follow the word"

Me (far be it from me to avoid running through such a wide open door):"Oh yeah we definitely can't have people thinking! Independent thought and debate would just suck all the power out of the Christian church"

Customer(scrambling for talking points):Well there was a lot of the curch using power back in the old days but...."

The ride ends. Unwavered he invited me to Tuesday night bible study at his house. Should have told him I've read the thing 3 times or so and he really didn't want me coming there to dissect it for him. I may show up just to satisfy the impish Satyr in me. Pan is my man after all.
Always tip your cabbie but don't freaking preach to him!

1. So, did he tip?
When I worked for tips, I found that the preacher-evangelical types were less likely to tip than just about anyone else.

2. Bingo
Had to save it for the tithe I guess. I suppose he thought the effort to save me from Hell was reward enough. Doesn't buy my cigarettes though.

10. Fundies are notoriously bad tippers
I'm in my (counting on my fingers...) 20th year in the cab business, and though I work in the office now, I still hear from drivers how bad the tips are when a fundy convention hits town.

And...damn...I hadn't realized it's been 20 years until just now. Funny thing about that -- I originally planned on doing it only about 6 months.

4. Oh man, I'm sorry.
There is a time and a place, if you're so inclined. Cold calls have crappy results, and doesn't God want us to be good stewards? ;) I usually say something to that effect. It's so easy to mess with them when you used to be one of them. :D

5. Good for you! I wish you'd been outside my son's middle school
yesterday afternoon. A middle-aged man was on the corner right outside the school grounds with a big crate. As the kids began to leave the building, he opened the crate and began pulling out handfuls of tiny bibles. Every student who passed received one and my son was the first with his hand out. He ended up coming home with a friend's bible as well, to give to his sister... the two of them pore over the book and pick out verses that highlight the "sins" of whichever family member they want to irritate. New books were required because *someone* got tired of being picked on and threw the last one in a pond. It wasn't me! However happily it turned out for my children, it bothers me that the kids are being targeted like this.

6. This is what I can't stand about these people
Everyone is entitled to their own belief system, but why oh why, do they feel compelled to inflict it on others? I was raised in the "evangelical" church and I know that "evangelize" means to "spread the word", but did they have to base an entire religion on it? This is why they are filled with hate. The hatred of anyone "different" starts because they are told that theirs is the only way and that everyone else is wrong. What would Jesus say about this?

8. Persistent cusses, aren't they?
I just look at them and say, sorry I'm Jewish. I'm not, but these in the South kinda get a look of horror on their faces and beat a hasty retreat.
