10. The point of choosing a nominee is to pick one that will be elected.

The perfect candidate with whom everybody agrees on each point does not exist. Dennis Kucinich is a great member of Congress and has great ideas, but if he was the Democratic candidate for President in 2008 what would you call the winner? President McCain (or any other Republican). Reality is a harsh mistress.

I'm from the south, and a big-time death-penalty state. However, I'm against it on all fronts...it doesn't matter how fairly it's meted out, and if we're totally sure only the guilty are actually put to death...I'm against it. I've instructed my next of kin that if I'm gruesomely murdered, to please instruct the DA that I'm against capital punishment, and to please not consider it. My religious beliefs preclude it in all cases (and I really struggle when it come to certain crimes, but in the end I think it's wrong).

However...I have many friends from other parts of the country, who are as liberal as I am on all other issues, but they hesitate on this one.

I'm pragmatic enough to realize that a candidate that conforms to all my ideals is probably not electable, at least not for the time being. Right now I feel that Gore is the man for me.

Even though I don't like Obama that much though...he'd probably get my vote in a head to head race between the two because he is anti-death penalty.

Too much baggage, people don't like him, too tied to Clinton, now known as "the" global warming guy, etc. I'm not evaluating the truthfulness or fairness of these claims, just what I see as the reality of them. He will be too easy to paint as an extremist on global warming and anti-business, etc. Also, I think people have a hard time feeling personally comfortable with him.

31. I didn't support Gore in the 2000 primaries..

I supported Gore in the 1988 primaries, and supported Clinton/Gore both times. I still have a dog named Tipper, and only assumed I would back Gore in the primaries as Clinton left office!

Then Gore lost my vote!!! :wow: Gore just had excuses on healthcare reform, but only Bill Bradley embraced anything close to universal coverage. Only Bradley said the surpluses should be used to reduce the national debt, but Gore hide behind watered-down tax cuts. And Gore won the nomination...and then continued this lameness into the fall!

Like me..most voters held their noses and voted for Gore over Bush. With a well run campaign and a little courage, Gore would have beaten Bush in a huge landslide. But instead...Gore won the popular votes while still letting Bush become President!! If you had asked me in 1998 if I would oppose Gore in the Democratic primaries in 2000 my answer would have been "NEVER!!"

Will Gore get my primary vote in 2008? :shrug: That depends on whether he actually runs a campaign this time. ;)

I was a Bradley volunteer in 2000 and still have a Bradley 2000 magnet sticker on my fridge. He was/is an awesome candidate that unfortunately had a half-witted staff.

I'll take Bradley over Gore any day. I like them both, but Bill truly is a genuine American hero.

but I don't think there's a chance in hell he will garner more votes than he did in 2000. As much as he tried to distance himself from Clinton then, he still racked in plenty of Clinton holdovers. While I firmly believe Gore legitimately won that non-election, the general electorate will still view him as a loser- even if on a subconscious level. That doesn't exactly inspire voter confidence.

And while this might sound a bit snarky, I find it a bit odd that so many progressives tend to overlook who Gore's running mate was in 2000. I voted for that ticket, too, but I certainly don't feel proud to have voted for Lieberman. That would be an interesting poll, BTW. That is, finding out how many DU'ers would support a Gore/Lieberman ticket now.

Anyway, I'll support the dem candidate regardless- except for Lieberman- for me, Gore just isn't my first choice. I want to WIN.

I think he has taken a stronger, more independent stand. He knows how to get the attention of the press on his own. He is clear-headed and resolute these days.
I could see him as an outsider re-entering.
