THANK LINCOLN CHAFEE (R-RI)
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/30/politics/politicsspecial1/30cnd-alito.html

"Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island today became the first Republican senator to oppose the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court."
...
"Judge Alito has outstanding legal credentials and an inspiring life story," Mr. Chafee said, in a statement released by his office. "However, I am greatly concerned about his philosophy on some important constitutional issues."

Well, here's one Repub. with his head screwed on right regarding ScAlito!

8. It's not the right thing
It's the politically expedient thing. He knows his "No" vote doesn't mean anything, but he's in serious danger of losing his race right now. He's got to pretend to be pro-choice enough so he doesn't lose the monumentally stupid endorsement he got from NARAL.

that he's an independent thinker who respects the constitution. We should be encouraging that.

Voting for closure sucks, but this guy is not all bad -- he's at least voting against Alito.

13. It's cloture, not closure--the only closure that happened today is the
closure of the door of democracy right in our faces.

I don't expect a Republican to do any different, but don't ask me to reward the sumbitch for it. He should have voted with the brave Dems, if he plans on voting against the guy. Anything else is just strategic voting for the gophers who don't get it. It's sop for the dumb masses.

stand-alone thinker. He caves in to Bush way, way too often.

I would like to see a liberal Democrat replace him in the November Senate election in Rhode Island.

I really cannot believe all the negative responses to him that I am reading.

People, this senator voted with us when TOO MANY 'democrats' did not!

I always believe "never trust a republican", but Chafee did something VERY RIGHT today and we should recognize that and give credit where credit is due.

Geez!

Now back to our own "dems" and kicking them in the balls!

His yes vote to end cloture was pretty telling

By voting no on Alito he pretty much wraps up his re-election. No one is going to bring up his vote on cloture.

He assists Frist in maintaning majority leader status, and at bottom, that is the only important consideration. The "moderate" Republicans are the most vulnerable to replacement by string Democratic candidates, and fire must be concentrated upon them when they run for re-election.
