Baby Cattle-Prod Suspect: 'I Love My Daughter'
http://news.yahoo.com/s/wtae/20061117/lo_wtae/10335616

<snip>
A Somerset man was in court Thursday, accused of breaking his infant daughter's leg, shocking the baby with a cattle prod and smashing her head against a bathroom sink and a dining room table.

WTAE Channel 4's Jennifer Miele reported that the defense is examining Brandon Austill's childhood, trying to figure out if the 22-year-old suspect was ever abused.

The defense also said Austill is very remorseful, and they're trying to determine if drug use may have played a role in his alleged behavior, Miele reported.

Austill was returned to the Somerset County Jail after waiving his preliminary hearing, telling reporters, "I love my daughter," as he walked out of the county courthouse.

I am against the death penalty, but honestly these kinds of cases really test that belief.

1. Loves her how, extra crispy?
Sick SOB.

I know what I would do to the person that did that to my kid. That person had better pray the cops find him before I do.

2. Some love!
Sounds like a meth addict. I wouldn't be surprised. When on meth, they'll do anything.

3. Cut this guy some slack, eh?
I mean, come on, he was just doing his homework. Assignment 4 in the UCLA Cop Training manual.

After all, them Campus Cops have to know how to subdue some toddler that might wander in from some off the street to use a university library restroom. (BTW: Do Tazers have a "infant" setting?)

How's he going to get ahead in this world unless he practices?

:sarcasm:

More seriously; If the child dies, no Death Penalty for him IMHO. Just give him Life and put him among the General Population of a nice maximum security prison. That will do just fine.

8. You know--I don't believe your childhood is responsible for everything
My cousin had a drug-addicted mother. She left her and my other two cousins (who I don't know because they went to live with their father) to fend for themselves in Seattle without food or money in the apartment.
My cousin was 3 or 4 at the time and left to care for an infant and a 1-year old. I remember my Grandma having to fly to Seattle to get the kids only to have my aunt leave and take them again. Before passing too much judgement, my Aunt was mentally ill as well as on drugs AND this was 35 years ago.
She was abandoned, abused, neglected, starved, beaten and probably molested at a young age.
By what we expect from severely abused children, she should have become just like her mother. Instead, she became an accomplished young woman.
She is married to the same man since she was 18 (she is now close to 50).
It's not impossible to leave your childhood behind and I don't believe it is always an excuse for what you do as an adult.
