I can't wait to buy my Playstation 3.......
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 01:09 PM by trumad
Oh I won't wait in line like some but I will go to Target and pluck down the 500 bucks to snag one.

Oh but shit---with all those people dying in Iraq, should I...and what would the poor people think? Shit----with homophobia spreading like a cancer in America, will my purchase hurt Gay people?

I know that I'll have to plug it in to a wall outlet, but if I do, will it hurt the Environment.

AND God, what about my couch...will sitting on it for hours on end, playing PS3 games, wear the fabric out hence making textile workers work longer hours for minimum wage.

Then again---after playing Grand Theft Auto, I may find the urge to carjack a liberal hippie of their brand new Prius.

Oh now I'm fucking confused..... What will some on DU think! Oh the Humanity....They may frown down on me as if I was some kind of freeper Nazi. Would Nazis have played Super Mario? Would Hitler enjoy the Power Rangers Dino Thunder game? maybe...

Oh, but I don't want to offend some of my fellow DUers.... why have fun after a long week of hard work when I can hop on DU and mope about stupid things like PS3.

What have we become? What have I become... Fucking capitalist have infected me.... that's it...I'm giving away everything....well not my Birkenstocks.

17. What If The Terrorist Had REALLY Big Hands?
Like Yao or Shaq big hands? Then the terrorist would win. But, if you had a PS3, you could fight the terrorist on that, and his big hands wouldn't matter.

You didn't think of that, now didja?

I don't want one, but if I did want a game console with Ethernet, wireless Bluetooth, and BluRay, it would seem to fit the bill. I wouldn't touch a first-run Sony (or Microsoft) system for any money, though. Now, a Nintendo Wii, yes. I'll happily buy one of those.

I like watching them play, but I'm hopeless at it! The Harvest Moon series and Animal Crossing are more my speed. That speed being tortoise-like.

Maybe the new Wii controllers will help me improve my hand-eye coordination. Either that or just exhaust me. ;)

Come on back! Tom Nook's having a going-out-of-business sale and has got some great bargains. He's going to form a band with K.K. Slider and needs the money.

:+

I hope they make an Animal Crossing for the Wii. Fishing, digging, etc. with that controller would be awesome.

12. Guess I'm living in the past.
I don't have one or want one. I don't have an Ipod, camera phone, modern car, plasma tv, on-line computer at home, satellite tv or even a cell phone although I might have to but then the phone service won't work in the rural area where I live and would need it most. I never even liked those Walkman's because I like to hear what's going on around me and those things are feel claustraphobic to me. Welp, it's time to hitch up the team to the backboard and go into town for supplies like coffee, flour, barrel pickles, new plough blade, and candy sticks for the kids which is 12 miles away and will take about an hour just to get there.

except for the computer thing.. We have 4 couputers in our house and Cable internet(s)..

but the rest of it is US.

Never even held an iPod..hate hate hate cell phones..
We still have a phone with a CORD :)
I have exactly ONE music CD (still in the wrapper)
Never even had a cassette player or cassette
We still have our 8-track on one stereo
We buy used cars and keep them FOREVER..we have:
70 Torino
82 Toyota Corolla wagon
84 Dodge pickup
91 Honda Accord EX

We take in rejected, dumped pets and they live here until they die of old age

Our "newest" Tv is about 5 years old, and was bought for under $400..

We are cheapskates, and fuddy-duddies.

Our grown kids are the ones with all the gadgets:)

52. Hah, hah.. .!
I'm a little more modern than you since I have quite a few music CDs. I still have a box of cool LPs but no turntable. My car is from 1987 with roll up windows! TV is big boxy from 1986 or so. And, I hang my clotes out to dry. I don't mind not having gadgets but my daughter wants an Ipod. She can be hip, I don't care to.

Go out and enjoy the 80+ degree weather down there. I look at the webcam for the Santa Monica pier and Venice Boardwalk my old hangouts. It's dark and cold up here. But, hey, the leaves turn colors and in the spring all the apple and plum blossoms come out, the mustard growing in the vineyard rows, birds galore...so some good, some bad.

55. I'm a modern gamer and I don't have half that stuff
PS3? Not even close to worth it. Ipod? Why, when there's a CD mp3 player; or else a much cheaper NORMAL mp3 player that can hold ONLY a hundred songs. Plasma tv... yeah you need that. Modern car? I don't even have a car! Or a cell phone.

Yeah, I'm rather on the poor side... I guess that makes me actually CONSIDER my prospective purchases instead of just running out to grab the newest piece of gotta-have-it crap that the media has overhyped to death.

One of the funniest jokes in the gaming community is a quote from Kaz Hirai of Sony at E3: "599 US DOLLARS!"

Sure, the people fighting each other over the PS3 right now are fairly moronic...but I am tired of people carrying that over to "OMG all video games and video gamers are bad and lazy and isn't this such a awful commentary on our society!"

On that note:

____

http://www.childsplaycharity.org/

Child's Play -- the Video Gamers' Charity

"Since 2003, gamers have banded together through registered Seattle-based charity, Child's Play. Over a million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children's hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since our inception.

We collect no administrative fees or other charges, 100% of all gifts and donations go directly to our partner hospitals, to help make life a little brighter for a sick child."

______

Yup..all video gamers...lazy and self centered....

57. Sony has had trouble making the darn things
You may believe there is a secret PS3 mine somewhere in Nevada but they are manufactured in Japan. There have been major development and manufacturing problems that have repeatedly delayed the introduction. Sony is doing it's darnedest to make more but can't.

It makes no sense to hold back production when there are 2 new competing systems. More PS3 sold, more games made for PS3, then less people buy the competitors products.

And wouldn't Sony like to have the money now as opposed to losing all the money to the resale market. No, they just like screwing people and losing money. It must be some sort of inscrutable Japanese plot, right?

that you can't wait. ;)

Because, generally speaking, stating that you can't wait for something usually implies a colossal event is about to occur that may or may not change your life.

And we all know that one not being able to wait for a video game console, although a very much overly hyped media event to the point of ridiculous, is not a life changing event in, say; having a child would be or getting a major job promotion or the sudden news that one has recovered from cancer.

:)

53. Why would you pay that?
There are like 2 games out worth playing.

I'm gonna wait and see if a) the system doesn't die off, which it very well might, and b) when it will sell for a reasonable price.

54. I'm going with the Wii
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 04:06 PM by wicket
The main selling point (for me) being that they will let you download all of the old Nintendo games for free to play on the new system. I love my PS2 (scratch that - my bf's PS2 :) ), but I don't envision upgrading until the price comes WAY down.

On edit - I stand corrected, the old games will be about $5 a piece to download, still a damn great deal!

Sword swinging with that remote? HELL YEAH!

Imagine when Lucasarts makes a lightsaber game for that system.

80. A Wii here, too.
In fact, it's already been shipped and is scheduled to arrive next week.

Yes, before anyone asks, it was retail price ($249). It's the kids' big Christmas present this year. Now I just need to find a second controller for it.

67. We need some "Agitprop" Playstation and Xbox games!
Just seeing these long lines waiting for this box makes me kind of sick, when it's still hard as hell to get anyone to stand up and make similar public displays of dedicated support for issues that really matter to us day to day.

I've always liked playing videogames. Have less time to do it now than when I was younger, but now it seems so much of a time sink that I cannot afford.

I'm wondering if we need to get and find some very good game developers out there and get some good agitprop games developed to balance out the entertainment escape focused media that the games market has become much like the news media, movies, etc. have become that each day drift farther away from providing useful themes of living in today's society instead of being titillated by gratuitous sex and violence.

I don't mean we don't make it entertaining, but I have to believe we could put twists in the story to get people thinking more about the corporate control over everything, and to think twice about what they just have done after having gone through a "Doom style" shoot'em up sequence.

87. Metal Gear Solid series
Play those...that'll get you thinking about politics. You'll probably have to play through the three of them about five times each before you even begin to understand what it's actually talking about, but it's well worth it.

On that note, The Matrix had its share of gratuitous violence, but it also brought up some great questions about the modern world. As did V for Vendetta. So not everything is mindless entertainment these days, just too much of it.

76. Why are people so sensitive about this?
Buying one and enjoying the games is one thing but it is a little looney to stand in line for hours to get one.

Then again, I'm not willing to stand in long lines for anything - not concerts or athletic contests or any product.

Grand Turismo 5.

Looks pretty cool.

We play sports and racing games around here, no guns or killing.

We'll get a PS3, but later, maybe in the spring or summer.
