I may be wrong, but I think today was a seminal moment.
We, as an electorate, are often told that we get the government we deserve. We are told that we need to support our leaders, call our friends, drum up support, donate, telephone, get the message out.

Well, without leadership, spontaneously, naively, honestly we tried to do all of the above. We deluged our leaders with phone calls, emails, faxes.
We got laughter.

Biden chuckled with Imus that --well, ha ha, I already did my filibuster when I questioned Alito. We don't have a prayer of stopping him. I'll vote no on the first cloture vote, but it's really a waste of time...

Obama said he'd vote no to cloture but it was a waste of time. We really need more Democrats in there...blah, blah, blah. Thanks for the enthusiasm Barak.

Bingaman - 20 minutes before the vote tells us, through an aide, maybe he'll vote against cloture if we give him 2,000 calls in 20 minutes. He ended by voting for cloture.

Landrieu -- Who had us all crying for New Orleans voted for cloture. See, this will focus attention on a relief for New Orleans package. Alito's a distraction. So much for a pro-choice woman that Emily's List endorses.

Byrd -- The respected Constitutionalist, the man who carries a copy with him at all times, who rails against Executive power and the surrender of Congressional war-making power to an Imperial Bush votes yes on cloture to a Supreme Court nominee whose "unitary executive" theory gives a blank check to that same President to torture, wiretap, and hold Americans indefinitely and without charges because "it's wartime".

Cantwell -- The guru of Real Audio, the Internet personified, votes for cloture on a man who can't tell us if there's a constitutional right of privacy.

And the noble Johnson and Dorgan -- profiles in courage on the great plains.

Ah. All so spineless. So wormy. So disgusting.

So do we listen the next time when the DLC or MoveOn or the DNC sends us those duns for money, telling us that if we don't contribute, the barbarians will have their way? That they have our best interests at heart. That they want the best for us. That they're fighting for us. That they matter.

I don't think so. Count me out. I'm taking names, now, pals. No more bullshit from bullshit artists for me.

7. I got a call from the DNC just yesterday and a call from
the DCCC on Saturday. Told both of them I no longer give through the party - I don't trust them.

I do my own research and send off checks directly to those candidates I really like and think will make a difference. This is essential because the DNC and DDDC (supposedly) can't get involved in Democratic primaries so I am paying particular attention to the entire field early on. That way I hope to not be left with an empty suit or a repug-lite candidate for the general election.

Last week I was privileged to have a 20 minute conversation with a candidate for the U.S. Senate who is in a 4 way primary race - not in my home state. I liked his answers so I hung up the phone and sent him $50.

8. Do NOT give to the DCCC!!!!
Give directly to the candidates YOu favor. The DCCC is abandoning congressional districts to the repukes.

I know: It happened to the candidate I was working for. She withdrew. Yes, the reason given was because "the district is too Republican".

11. 'choice' is just the Dem version of red meat to lure you to the polls
they know as well as GOP that abortion is a sideshow, and the real business is business.

Dinos survive because some on the left are like pavlov's dogs on abortion just as the right is prayer in schools, the flag, and abortion.

13. I think it's absolutely flabbergasting that..
.. a serious rightwing extremist creep like Alito could be confirmed,
a bigot nominated by a president whose poll numbers are in the
toilet and who runs a very sinister crime syndicate for an admin.

Sad and mad don't even begin to describe my feelings. It's more
like how can human beings even consider such a thing?

Which organization out there will channel money ONLY to progressive candidates? I do not want one more dime of my money going to a single one of the DINOs.

27. Better yet, I'm writing to all of the blanket donation beggars and telling
them to remove me from their lists NOW.

I'm not waiting for their next missive asking for donations. The little money I have to give to politicians is staying close to home with candidates who've been proven to have backbone and progressive views.

31. I don't believe I'll give another dime to the DNC.
I don't want to say I'll never do it (never is a very long time), but I just can't imagine how they could convince me to do it. I'm so appalled at their actions, and I BLAME THE DNC. I believe this was a decision made by the power elite of the party, and that the votes were assigned to benefit individual office holders, not the US citizens. It's just as bad as what the Repugs have been doing for years.
