People don't know geography |
|
Quick, where is Mongolia?
If you don't know, do me and everyone else a favor. Get a globe and study it. Just fucking LOOK at it for a while. You don't have to memorize every little detail, but please get to know the general locations of countries. Know that Japan is in Asia, for example. Know that Italy is the one that looks like the boot.
It's embarrassing. The freeptards who support the Iraq war can't even find it on the goddamn map.

I'd be more impressed by people who say "better to fight them over there" if they knew where "there" is and who "them" are.

A big plane flies them over there, and there's no reason for them to learn where Iraq is at as long as they remember that it's filled with American-hating heathen islamofascists and terraists (who, ironically enough, are there because of their hero and savior).

Back in the late '70s. Risk. The war game. Not played on the standard board, but augmented and revised and played on a National Geographic world map.
Curacao, Socotra, Andorra, Puerto Rico ... whatever. At some point it was important to know where it was.

I've got a good one for you. My husband is from Holland. Even though he's been here a lot of years, he still has an accent. A couple days ago a woman who works where he does (different shifts so they don't run across each other very often) finally noticed this and asked where he was from. He told her and had her remark 'oh, then you've seen wild kangaroos'.

That's why the dingo population in Holland is so big.. The kangaroos no longer can sneak up on them , so they had to switch to eating tulips:)..
but only the red ones :)

I can usually win arguments since I know the relevant history and nobody else has a clue about it. I would rather have discussions with people who are fsmiliar with historical topics but I only find this when I am talking to Civil War buffs it seems.

They are 10 and 14, and they don't seem to know a whole lot about geography. Don't they teach it anymore?
I haven't seen them looking at it much, and my 14-year old especially would roll her eyes if I quizzed her or made her study it, but hopefully they will look at it from time to time.

I've always been interested in a geography. In fact, my parents had once bought me a globe. I looked at it about every day.
But, yes, geography is something most don't know much about.

36. Ask any foreign language teacher |
|
The first order of business on day one is to make sure that all the students know the location of the country/countries whose language they are learning. I still remember my first day of Spanish class. "Yes, you're studying the language of Mexico, but it's not called Mexican; it's called Spanish. Spanish originated in Spain and was brought..."
I started doing things like that after one of my students kept referring to Japan as "down there."
