PELOSI: Bringing This Unnecessary Pre-Emptive War To An End Is My Highest Priority
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 09:30 PM by kpete
Bringing the War to an End is my Highest Priority as Speaker
Rep. Nancy Pelosi

This morning, I visited our brave men and women at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center. It is a place of prayers, of honor, of respect, and reflection. And I left there more committed than ever to bringing the war to an end.

I told my colleagues yesterday that the biggest ethical issue facing our country for the past three and a half years is the war in Iraq.

This unnecessary pre-emptive war has come at great cost. Nearly 2,900 of our brave troops have lost their lives and more than 21,000 more have suffered lasting wounds. Since the war began, Congress has appropriated more than $350 billion, and the United States has suffered devastating damage to our reputation in the eyes of the world.

4. Nice to know you're getting with the program, Nancy
Now, once you've done that, perhaps we could look into rethinking that whole impeachment being off the table thing. Huh? Ya think?

11. What makes you think she was ever not "with the program"?
Why do you think she nominated Murtha for Majority Leader?

23. My guess is that's the strategy.
1. Get the troops home
2. Impeach the idiot

7. Speak it, Speaker! An encouragingly gutsy start.
I think we need to address the new civil war we've helped start before just up and leaving.

But I agree that ending the War must be job #1 for the Democratic congress. And bravo Nancy for calling it an "unnecessary pre-emptive war". Only thing missing in her speech was the word "mistake."

9. Again and again, I've noticed over the last several years
it's WOMEN who are really doing the important and heavy lifting.

Not that men can't or won't or aren't, just that the Sibel Edmondses, the FBI agent Crowleys, the Kristin Breitweisers.... the Nancy Pelosis.... have been leading the way in unprecedent numbers and audacity (and I'm having a mental lapse remembering any more of them, but there have been a lot).

your highest priority. Please bring them home now. And when you do, please make sure they have a home and are not homeless.

14. She gets points from me...
...because she bothered to visit that hospital. I hope it will inspire her to work with people like Dennis Kucinich to work out the best way to stop this war -- defund it. Incrementally, without harm to our troops, in full cooporation with the U.N. But we have to get out, and Dubya is not likely to cooperate. The Baker-Hamilton Commission (my heart goes into a *thumper* when I think about Mr. Baker, with all his ties to the Saudis, heading up this commission) may hand George a face-saving plan to get out, but it won't be soon enough.

16. Thank you, Nancy, for saying "END". END. END END END!
It's so wonderful to hear her say she wants it to END, instead of the usual talk from politicians about "redeploy", "draw down", "gradual" this and "gradual" that, blah blah blah blah.

It needs to be fucking ENDED. NOW.

22. Let's hope that there is more thought give to the getting-out
process than appears to have been the case for the getting-in and post-invasion period.
I think almost everyone now agrees that this pre-emptive wars was one of the dumbest moves of all time and that the post-invasion occupation and reconstruction phase was totally inept.
That said, America (as a whole) now owns the problem - not just neo-cons & Republicans.
A unilateral pullout could lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths if not thought out properly.
I don't know what the solution is, but the pullout needs to take into account that the mess created thus far could get a lot worse for the poor bastards living there..

25. There are no other options to "making" Bush pull out if he refuses.
He is the Commander in Chief and it is his ultimate decision as to whether we get out of Iraq or not. As long as his ambitions are funded, he will continue them.

19. I wonder how many members of Congress have paid a visit to
our military hospitals, besides Nancy and John Murtha. Maybe a field trip of the entire Congress on the first day in session might be just the thing to open a few eyes to the reality of W's war in Iraq.

29. They ought to take that idiot Sean Hannity with them.
Friday he was ranting about Pelosi ruining what we've accomplished in Iraq by withdrawing with no real plan.

If brains were cotton, you couldn't get enough out of Hannity to make a T-shirt for a piss ant!

26. I'm glad to see DUers here support this but....
...five minutes later I'll find another thread dissing Nancy because she took 'impeachment off the table'

Isn't ending the war our most highest priority? Can we sacrifice anymore lives or dollars by putting anything else ahead of this? I'm not saying we shouldn't investigate, I'm all for it. But let the investigations work their course and when the Bush Regime is exposed we'll have the support we need to get this guy impeached and out of office

priority. However, didn't she vote for the IWR? I seem to have misplaced my list of the Congress members who voted for it.
