Do "Under 40 Somethings Really Get off on Cruise Castle Wedding?
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 07:29 PM by KoKo01
I'm trying hard to understand why Tom Cruise and whoever he's wedding in that Castle is like Diana marrying Prince Charles. All Cables are covering it 24/7 and it's more important that our GOVERNMENT!

Maybe I'm clueless about what drives folks younger than I am...but is Tom Cruise like Elvis or Something? I'm telling my age here...but I just don't get what the BIG DEAL IS about Tom Cruise. He's not a Rock Star and so I don't really get what he is?

Can someone clue me in so I don't feel really OLD!!!

1. I'm 38 and could not care less about Tom Cruise.
Yeah, so he's a nutty Scientologist. OK. He's an OK actor who's made some OK movies. If it weren't him, it would be some other guy.

3. I don't think it has anything to do with youth.

And everything to do with the state of American journalism. The only thing that could kick TomKat off the cable news tonight would be a missing white girl/woman. :eyes:

4. i'm 39 and i could really give less than a shit about the whole thing
the best role Cruise ever played was Lestat--a self absorbed effeminate vampire. I am a big fan of Rice's books and almost had a heart attack when i found he was cast in that role but i went to see it anyways and really he seemed perfect like that was him in real life.

5. And why is MSNBC using "breaking news" for it. I see "breaking news"
and I'm looking for a disaster or some actual news, not what Tom and Katie or whoever are doing for their fucking wedding.

two some million dollars besides throwing a huge wedding. I think it could further stem cell research rather well, or put quite a few kids through College....just thinking.

7. Maybe people're waiting for some weird Scientology thing to develop.
So many weird things have happened surrounding Tom Cruise that we want to be right there when the next one happens!

9. How old is Katie...has she been married before? I'm clueless as I said.
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 07:54 PM by KoKo01
I just can't get it because I have teen relatives who don't know who Tom Cruise is...but I thought maybe my teen relatives are "out of it" or something. :eyes:'

Who is Katie? Movie credits? I honestly don't know who she is or how old she is. I saw Cruise in some Samurai movie and before that with Meg Ryan where he was trying to intice her with a basting fork or something...

I just don't get where he came from to have so much coverage or who he's marrying that she's so important. Maybe it's a Cable Boondoogle for their folks to go to Italy for free vacation for all the "hard work" they do? Hard Work. :eyes: Whatever...it seems that they are all enthralled with Tom Cruise and whomever he's marrying. Hasn't he been married before? How Old is HE?

10. It's vicarious living and celebrity worship
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 08:02 PM by Lexingtonian
When the serfs' lives suck and the wealthy are having fun, the American press provides a fantasy that all the minions and people in need of a life glom onto more desperately than during better times. Oh, with it all being about the wealthy and 'powerful', the wealthy and 'powerful' tend to have nothing better to do than show off and have airs, and try to outcompete each other. (It is an exquisite misery to be one of the clique, but looked down upon by most of them.)

Other than that, it's a Scientology PR event about a mediocre couple. Katy wasn't enthused about much of anything except the attention and having the kid- it's just about acceptable in western Europe these days to not actually marry if you don't really feel like it. But she let Tom and the rest talk her into this big shebang, which she figures will be about her. Scientology will do everything possible to make it a propaganda event for itself, and all the actor celebs that show up will try to steal as much limelight and publicity as possible, too. So it's all a nexus of plays for attention by movie people and hypercoverage by the (now oversized) industry in gossip and voyeurism and vicarious living. Sort of a Perfect Storm of pathologies and greed and excesses that has to implode in its own aftermath, imho.

Tom Cruise is the athletic Everyman of this generation of film stars, so he has appeal to male blue collar and white collar audiences- which not many Hollywood actors do these days. But he's also wacky in fairly conventional ways, in ways compatible with his fans. He does the angry vicious blue collar redneck thing pretty well, though the rumor is that it's because he's short and closeted/in denial of being gay. I think Katy has let herself get confused, as quite a few women do, construing his attentions and possessiveness as being love or something close enough to it. Then there's the Scientology. I doubt that this marriage lasts five years.

15. I don't know about age, but the BBC website gives stats in the popular stories
and the Cruise/Holmes marriage is, unfortunately, the most popular story, although it it not the most prominent on the BBC's front page:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/live_stats/html/map.stm

That is, worldwide, in the UK, and in North America (though while I was typing this, the 'news' of who got voted off Strictly Come Dancing ('Dancing With the Stars' to the USA, I think) displaced it).

It's gossip - something people can talk about, harmlessly, with people they vaguely know, without getting into arguments about politics, religion, etc. Cruise has been in enough blockbuster movies, as 'the good guy', that everyone has an impression of him. Probably not a true impression, but that's note really needed for gossip.

17. It's the wedding derby
Overwrought ceremonies crammed with more painstaking detail than a float in the Rose Bowl Parade...and it won't be a perfect memory unless it's perfect. Perfect! Otherwise the marriage is DOOMED!

Wedding hysteria always reminds me of the Judge Judy episode where a young couple claimed their reception was ruined by undercooked plantains. Judy: "You got married, people ate, they had a good time. Have a happy marriage, have a happy life, get over it, goodbye!"
