In the Corridors of Power, Reverberations of Change

By DeNeen L. Brown
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 19, 2006; Page D01

If a party falls in the halls of Congress, does it make a sound?

Can you hear change? Is it the difference between the clomp of well-shined shoes holding up the girth of heavy hitters, of men no longer in power, and the slip-slap of sling-backs on marble floors?

Just what does it sound like when the balance shifts?

(snip)

Doors slam. Locks snap. Click, click down the hall. But other doors open.

Snatches of telephone conversations spill into empty hallways. "The senator is unavailable. I can pass on your message. . . . No . . . Not at the moment. . . . Because of the recent elections, there is no one available."

Then comes the sound of Republican resurrection on C-SPAN. Secret ballots cast for Sen. Trent Lott have allowed the Mississippi Republican to rise again from racially induced political death. Change comes and it goes. Political death is not final.

Walk through the open door of Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), once a contender for the White House. You listen for sounds of change but there are none. Just a strange stillness, the absence of giddiness. On a television sitting under a window, Fox News is reporting, "One dead as storm sweeps Southern states."

Outside in the hallway, there are two large gray bins on which notes are affixed: "ALLEN (DO NOT MOVE)." The bins are empty and silent.

7. Republican Rep. Joe Barton...
epitomizes why his party is in trouble. His stated agenda: to solve some of the problems Americans are increasingly frantic about? No, of course not! It's to get the Republicans back in power. What a moron.

The whole Bush cabal seems to believe in sticking with an agenda WAY past the point when your average rock can figure out it's not working.

I actually read "rock stars"! :D But, if I had only seen "rocks"(which I agree with) then we wouldn't have discussed the merits of Rock Stars. ;)

10. Sad and sadder.....
Well I'm a sad Democrat folks. Yes it's nice to have Congress back. Yes it will be nice to see some justice come out of committee investigations. But I have six grandchildren and for them I see only a future that is bleak. Global Warming is slowly cooking the planet. Our oceans are becoming sterile of live. The great tropical forests are disappearing. And here in the USA our economy is on life support from cash injections from the rest of the world. Social Security is all but dead for my and future generations. The world has or soon will *peak* in oil production with catastrophic impacts to us spoiled Americans who burn 25% of world oil yet are only 5% of world population. The middle class is joining with the bottom class as the ultra rich get richer. Slave labor in China and elsewhere sucks jobs out of the USA. And the Democrats will do little to nothing to fix these problems. So I am said, but for different reasons than the Republicans. Bob

15. You're right.
What you have detailed in your post and more are outrages (although I do not agree that social security is dead, unless repukes are allowed to kill it). But it's our job to hold our representatives' feet to the fire to address all of these outrages on behalf of all of our children, present and future.

25. Rep. Charles Rangel Will Seek to Reinstate Draft....
....and the band plays on... :nopity:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2622352

WASHINGTON - A senior House Democrat said Sunday he will introduce legislation to reinstate the military draft, asserting that current troop levels are insufficient to sustain possible challenges against Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," said Rep. Charles Rangel (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose the measure early next year.

At a time when some lawmakers are urging the military to send more troops to Iraq, "I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft," he said.

SNIP

He said having a draft would not necessarily mean everyone called to duty would have to serve. Instead, "young people (would) commit themselves to a couple of years in service to this great republic, whether it's our seaports, our airports, in schools, in hospitals," with a promise of educational benefits at the end of service.

I know it doesn't really mean that he's been literally thrown in the dustbin, but that's what it sounds like! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

30. Sad? Sad is when you lose your child to Bush's oil war.
Sad is when you come back from Iraq with both legs missing.

Sad is when your 14 year old daughter is raped and murdered by US troops.

Get a clue repugs, for God's sake, get a clue.
