Dobbs, Henry, CNN: If we had gone for a filibuster right after hearings...
we might have succeeded. I don't know why I post this, considering the source, but we might have had more of a chance. They were saying that if the Dems had insisted that they were not given answers to their questions at the hearings, and taken off from that point, with more time, that there would have been more of a chance for a filibuster. Of course, thanks to CNN, et.al., the major story out of the hearings was Mrs. Alito's crying jag, and the resulting chance to portray the Dems as mean and vicious -- nothing substantive. (I personally think we made a mistake also in trying to find something in Alito's past, instead of pounding, pounding runaway executive power -- which is the reason most Senators are giving for opposing Alito.)

I guess the point would be, for us, that we need to stay in battle mode, we need to strategize these things, we need to fight. We'll still probably be spun in the media, but what have we got to lose? Also, if we had a leader, a strategist, with Rove's unrelenting drive, working for good instead of evil, it would help.

3. You know, I am tired of "if only" excuses. Our lives are being affected
by their lack of courage to do the right thing.

Alito was dishonest and evasive during the hearings. He didnt answer the questions and they rewarded him with a seat on the Supreme Court bench.

Now they are trying to say, oh gosh, IF ONLY.....

How much more do Senators need to do the right thing? Or are some of our Democratic Senators supportive of granting more power to the Executive office and putting American citizens in jeopardy of our own government?

5. This is the press, for goodness sake, saying "if only" for them.
They could indeed have struck while the iron was hot, and fought this guy tooth and nail from the hearings, even if in a losing battle. I don't think they're for an out-of-control executive. I think they're politically timid, and what they don't realize, is that Americans, as a general rule, don't like timid.

4. I agree - it should have been all about the fascism. And the fight should
have been led out of the hearings by Judiciary Committee Dems.

The only reason Kerry even stepped at the tenth hour was because none of the Judiciary Dems were willing to stick their necks out to stand up with Kennedy and DO THE RIGHT THING.
