So that's it then? We're just going to give up?
I remember after the 2004 election when a similar feeling of doom and gloom presided over this message board. For awhile, I myself gave up on everything and felt that America was headed towards an irreversible decline.

I'm proud to say that I recovered and was soon ready to fight again. I will never surrender to these thugs. Think about it. There have been people throughout history who faced problems that make ours seem insignificant by comparison. When all hope seemed lost, they didn't give up and neither shall we.

Tomorrow is the Chimp's SOTU speech. Let's wipe the smirk off that creep's face.

1. I haven't heard anyone
throw in the towel yet... And if they did, I wouldn't believe it. Today anyway..

2. Just because you feel better...
...does not mean America is no longer on that irreverisble decline.

People will perk up in a week or two when there's a brand new scandal to get angry about.

It's on a decline but it's not irreversible

We can clean this mess up. It may take awhile but it can be done.

I'm not counting on our own party to do it though. Sad to see they're apparently so terrified of Bush, a guy with a 36% approval rating no less, that they're just going to let him continue to rape this country without doing anything about it.

No. We the people need to take action.

3. Not if we can help it!
We are concerned that the Indiana Democrats don't have anyone yet to run against the puke and useless Dick Lugar. We are going to discuss this at our upcoming Meet Up.

4. About the time they overturn Roe, we'll take over the party but..
...it's a day of mourning.

Why be surprised?

2000 Florida, Vichy Democrats quickly abandon Gore's fight including LIEberman.

2004 Ohio, only Democrats going in there after the election were the CBC and some brave colleagues.

That's just the start of the list.

These Vichy Democrats are the type of baseball players who sit out the big team brawls -- on the bench.

May they stay there forever.

6. This speaks directly to 2006, imho. Votes in Congress. House and Senate.

This nominee was not going to be beaten, regardless of cloture, given the numbers in the Senate. Democratic Senators across the board took a stand, though, as did we in the public realm. It fell short. I encourage DU members to find a Dem candidate you support in your State or district, get involved locally and help change the numbers.

10. I did.
I worked my ass off, too. But she withdrew from the race. Why? Because the DCCC, Emily's List and others would not support her. She had no registered-as-a-candidate opposition, either.

The DCC has stated that they have written off NJ's 5th Congressional District and, I quote "Just Don't Care". So we are lumbered with a piece of shit frothing right winger who couldn't give a tinker's damn about the people in his district.

Really.

Now, tell me why I should continue to support the Democratic party. I need a laugh.

7. Machine politics such as they are...
... I think it's foolish to continue to hang one's hopes on either party. M'self, I think nothing will reverse this decline if we keep supporting the status quo. Find a bright new--honest--Democratic candidate in Indiana, say, to upset Bayh and the state party apparatus will close ranks around Bayh, fund him sufficiently to ward off the primary attack and go right on doing what they've been doing.

I dislike saying it, but the Democrats, in the largest part, are no more progressive than the Republicans these days. Today's vote etched that in stone for me. Both parties are hidebound and corrupted. I think a new, persisting, progressive party is necessary, with a leadership determined to upset the power structure in Washington and willing to keep at it for decades. Otherwise, it's a trip downhill with the brakes burned out.

8. While I'm not giving up, and am usually the first person to post positive,
"don't give up," sentiments, even I have mixed feelings about what happened today. Some of the votes from our side simply aren't acceptable. I still think the only way to effectively accomplish Progressive agendas at this time is by voting for my Democrats...but there are exceptions and some of our people really disappointed me this afternoon. It's not grounds for scrapping the Party and moving North, but this isn't...I get why people may feel more pessimistic than ever.

11. Give up? Why?
Our best recruiting tool is just about to be sworn in as the newest Justice on the Supreme Court!

I feel a backlash coming from this that will stop the Republican machine dead.

13. how 'bout we do an end run on our "leaders" . . .
and, via the primaries, nominate Al Gore as our candidate for president in 2008? . . .

actually, what we should do is convince him to start campaigning NOW, so that he can bring up the issues that the corporate media is ignoring and at least get some coverage . . . things like election fraud, since it will be necessary to resolve that one to have any hope of winning anything in 2006, 2008, or anytime in the foreseeable future . . .
