17. Right.
I heard that after the 2000 and 2004 elections as well. After 6 years, I expect just a little more from the leadership than pointless posturing. Obama is right. We did NOT make our case to the American people. No one here needs convincing but there are a whole lot of voters who do.

We need to work on developing an alternative media that most Americans might notice. The Young Turks net broadcast was a valiant effort, but probably preaching to the choir.

39. Disagree Wordie, the Dems that voted for cloture
just told everyone that they would rather, for whatever reason, vote for a SC nominee that proved to be for more power to the pres., corps., and fewer rights for the ordinary people. Apparently they didn't vote the way their constituents wanted since their constituents were probably democrats.

42. I am not an idiot, I know it was important.
We will need to fight hard to win the white house so upcoming vacancies in the court can be filled by us. It just isn't the end of the world unless you want it to be.

Americans have been apathetic about what their representatives in government have been doing. The politicians aren't used to so many people waking up all at once. That awakening is because of the internet, blogs and message boards like ours. That awakening isn't growing smaller, it's growing larger by leaps and bounds. I dare say that politics may never be the same ever again because of an informed electorate that is ever-growing.

Stop selling us short - and you never answered my question...what are you going to do for the many courageous dems that do represent us?

You have been here at DU a long time, and I sincerely hope you decide not to leave us or leave the party. Fight like you always have to make it better. You really have no choice, it's obviously in your nature.

45. Winning the WH or Congress won't matter
now that the Roberts Court can reshape our laws for at least the next generation. I don't see why that is so hard for people to understand.

No, I am not saying that we should just give up. But today was a watershed event in American politics and law, the most important vote that these Senators have ever made or will make unless Bush gets to replace Stevens (heaven help us). Winning the WH and Congress will not change that, and we need to understand the ramifications of this vote so that we are prepared for them.

55. No, but we will have to refocus our energies
We have an uphill battle at the federal level for the next generation because of the Roberts Court. So does that mean we give up? No, and I think I said that in my first post.

But what it does mean is that we have to understand the impact of the Roberts Court and act accordingly to circumvent it to the extent possible. We need to take our fights back to the states and local races, because they are going to be more important now than ever.

57. That makes sense...
and I totally agree!

You said it before in overdramatic terms. What we do together in the coming years does matter, whether or not we have Alito and Roberts on the court. The efforts we make together matter all the more because of that fact. I know you agree - what we do matters...whether or not we win every battle. We are not irrelevent.

41. Don't be discouraged.
We are challenging over 200 years of party politics that ignores the grassroots. We are the people. We are the grassroots. Only 25 of the Senators recognized us for what we are. Next time, it will be 30 and after that 35 until the majority of the members of the Senate listen to us and not to the polls. The polls mean nothing. They count people who don't vote and don't care. And they ask the wrong questions. People like us, people who care and who are not cynical= will govern the country one of these days. It's just a matter of time. Just you wait and see. Don't lose the faith.

It's amazing. We uncovered mostly everything they threw in our path. In 1999, I knew absolutely nothing about politics. I just knew that Bush was poisonous. And the work began.

This IS a lifetime appointment. And that makes it pretty scary. We shall see. One thing I've learned about politics is that it is never over.

I didn't know I could feel worse than I did in 2000 and 2004. The reason is that I know the Supreme Court is going to be tainted as long as I live. Bush will be out of office and back on the damn range -- but Alito will STILL be on the highest court in the land. I'm SO SCARED of what happens next.
