Cancel support of Emily's List if they support Cantwell
Emily's List claims to support liberal women candidates who are Pro-choice: "Pro-choice Democratic women leaders are our first line of defense in fighting President Bush and his right wing agenda. That's why Republicans are targeting them for defeat in the next election. Early money from EMILY's List members and supporters is critical to helping these women launch strong campaigns."

Given Cantwell's vote on Alito today, she is no candidate that Emily's List should support.

I urge those of us who support Emily's List to withdraw yoursuppiort if they continue to support Cantwell:

1. I'll write 'em
I've always been a reliable source of funds for them, and I need to make sure that any future contributions won't go to ANY of the women today who voted to enable this thug or they can cross me off of their donor list.

I'll write them and see what they have to say ---

2. Emily's List does nothing of the sort.
I am not sure what it is that they do these days, other than raise money to keep Emily's List going, but they do not support women candidates of the aforementiond criteria all that well. They are, in fact, pretty goddamned useless.

Like so many of the organizations that "surround" us. Just about themselves and their survival. Lost their way. Lost their view of us, too.

3. I called their DC headquarters today - they were flabbergasted as well.
They told me they are going to try to craft some formal response to Cantwell.

They said that they support democratic women who will not vote on a direct measure against choice, so they were thinking through how to handle this.

In the meantime, she suggested that we call Cantwell's office, identify ourselves as supporters via Emily's List, and let her know that we are recommending to Emily's List that she be "de-listed".

They sounded as shell-shocked as us, but I do think we need to follow up with what they actually do regarding Cantwell.

I wasn't happy about the re-listing of Stephanie Herseth after her anti-gay vote. If they don't do something in terms of a formal complaint to Cantwell (& permanent de-listing), I'm seriously going to reconsider my (quite substantial) support.

In the meantime, give generously to Planned Parenthood Action Fund - they'll be fighting all the court cases that will spring from this nazi getting on the Extreme Court.

8. Why didn't they KNOW??!!
It's their job to know. What are those people doing, if they don't know?

9. I called the very minute she cast her vote. They just saw it on TV.
I'll give them a bit of time to figure out what the formal response should be, but I definitely expect her to be de-listed, or they'll have to answer to me and all my other Emily's List friends.

12. On such an important vote...
Wouldn't it make just a small amount of sense for a group like E's L to know how she was going to vote?

Jesus Chrst, what are they doing down there? Why weren't they reminding her of some of the obligations she accepted when she accepted the money? This cannot have been a conscience vote for Cantwell!

13. My monthly contribution is not substantial but it is a huge % of my income
I have been out of work, first talking care of my dad while he was dying of cancer (left all his money, stocks, real estate, etc. to his girlfriend and left me with his medical debts...he was a Republican!), and then trying to now find work.

However, I have $16.50 taken from my bank account each month--in months when I don't spend more than $50 per month on food.

My point is that money is a real sacrifice, and I sure do not appreciate it going to support Cantwell or others who do not support Democratic values!

I shall call Emily's List tomorrow and register my displeasure and I'll mention their re-listing of Stephanie Herseth.

14. Thank you so much for giving in the cause of women everywhere!
The dollar amount we give matters not in the reflection of our commitment to women. The fact that you give, and give repeatedly and regularly, when you certainly could use the money elsewhere - is the most significant measure of all.

Some days when I feel like giving up and throwing in the towel (like today), I think of all the good people out there who give and act when it really hurts, and those that so desperately count on us to do that, and I think: "how can I just give up?".

Thank you so much for caring enough to be involved. O8)

Emilies list refused to Support her in '04, and made no move in '05 or '06.

Howard Dean saw Anne speak and picked her for Deans list. I have no clue what Emilies list is up to.

Thanks!

7. They just turned their back.
Emily's List is about Emily's List. It has little or nothing to do with people like us.

Trust me. I do know what I am talking about.

10. Your post concerns me. I'm a long-time generous supporter.
If you have real situations we should know about, I really want to know. I've been very involved with them (from the consumer side) and have always been impressed with their work - with the very notable exception of Herseth. Of course, if Cantwell totally blindsided them today I can't blame them for that, but I expect them not to support her in the future.

I don't want to damage their reputation here - we have so few effective pro-choice organizations (I belong to most of them - ha!), so I want to be careful posting anything of an unspecific nature.

However, I absolutely want to know if EL is not acting in all our best concerns.

Thanks for any info you have.

11. Trust me:
They just turned their back on Anne Wolfe. Barely gave her the time of day. Certainly gave her jack for money, when she was running against one of the biggest gumballs in The House and gave the best showing in years, in this district, in 2004. In a blue state, too.

"Early Money is Like Yeast"?. As if. I regard them, now, as yet another money sink that absorbs funds from committed and idealistic people but do not deliver on their stated mission. Like so many of the other money sinks on the left.

We know they gave Cantwell money. Did they fund Landrieu as well?

15. yes, they did...
Help elect Mary Landrieu.

I would say you aren't getting a good return on your dollar.

But hey, Anne's site is still up. Go and see if she would have made sense for them: http://wolfeforcongress.com
