Time to Re-think "Support Our Troops"?
While I empathize with the suffering of almost anyone (especially my fellow countrymen and women), I think it's long-past time to rethink our unconditional support of the military.

In short:

Why do we do this?

and

What does it foster in our society?

Two critical questions that I don't think we have fully thought through.

Yes, some people do this because of a personal connection (sons, daughters, friends, family). That's clearly one thing and quite personal. But, what about the rest of us? I have slowly come to think that the kind of blind support for the troops helps perpetuate a militarist mindset we have in this country: a mindset that has become so great that every time there is a new problem, we declare 'war' on it.

Isn't it time America thought of itself in terms of something else besides the military?

After the things * has done, America is in terrible need of a make-over. Let's just not do khaki this time!

1. Maybe its time some people in America did that, but not the Dems.

Dems have to put forth a commander in chief if we get a president elected, meaning a commander for the military. Not supporting the troops while seeking this power would be bad.

But as far as society goes, I think a lot of people don't support the troops, they think of them as lower class cleaning people. Those are the people Rangel was trying to hit with bringing back the draft.

2. I am Liberal ....
And I support a defensive military organization as an unfortunate necessity in a crazy world filled with ignorant people ....

History bespeaks poor results for defenseless nations ....

VERY poor longevity ....

I am proud of my military relatives, and I despise their misuse by vicious ideologues ....

3. I have thought this also.;
Thanking and supporting people for joining the military rather than for considering each's motive and the ultimate result. Thank you for helping others, for helping us to be able to go about daily life, etc etc etc I can understand, but thanks for just joining the military? Thinking this through recently also.

From DU rules:

Do not post broad-brush smears against US service people. Do not blame the troops for the mistakes of their officers or their Commander-in-Chief. Show the appropriate level of respect to those individuals who have put their own lives on the line to defend this country.
