To be in favor of a "draft" or... |
|
...some form of mandatory public service you would have to assume that there is an infrastructure for it.
That is a false assumption.
Even with the current all volunteer service the living conditions and personnel treatment are sub-par at best. These would only degrade with a mandatory service. How would our country benefit by turning loose disillusioned and angry young people, into our society, after forced service?

1. How did the CCC do it in the thirties? perhaps the first public service corp |
|
could build the infrastructure for the rest that follow?
If we tie public service to college funds and housing funds upon completion of service all those angry disillusioned young people could get an education without years of debt and put a down payment on a house.
That would piss me off too. not!

3. Ever hear of the GI bill? It built the middle class. Almost singularly. |

8. Let's face it- we're just not the People we once were. |
|
We could HANDLE it in the thirties, our forebears could handle service for the Country all the way until the seventies. But now we no longer have what it takes. I have read enough reasons, but it boils down to no one is willing to do what is required anymore. We are the "Somebody else will do it generation". No wonder things are so fucked up.

9. Most libertarians I know are under the impression they are self made self |

realized, self dependent people. They don't have a clue that they are in fact, just selfish.
They believe all people are islands.

For daring to suggest that National Service would be a good thing. "You're not taking my Child, you SOB!" despite the fact that a two year stint performing national service in this Country might be beneficial to the majority of the kids I know. The Military could be a, but not the only option. I can't believe people are going apeshit, what they think we want a six million man Army? There are only so many billets, they can't fill any more than that, everyone else would have to go to Americorps. Peace Corps, etc.
Oh well, it's a non starter. We'd rather live with decaying infrastructure, understaffed day care centers, old age homes, who cares?
