Inconvenient Truth has long waitlists - Please donate a copy to your local library.
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 10:34 AM by blm
One DUer reported her library had an 80 name waitlist already. If you can do more than one, please do so.

Thankyou - and please keep this reminder kicked.

1. Another option is to rent or buy a copy and show it
at your church, organization, neighborhood group, etc. Our church is currently showing it to several classes and will be showing it to the entire church within a few weeks. Afterwards there will be speakers and discussion. There is also planning taking place to show it to the public and follow that up with quarterly public forums on global warming and how people can do things personally to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Each of us can do things in our community to have a positive impact. I've been able to get the landlord of our office building to change all the bulbs to CF. With him, I approached it from the standpoint of saving money as opposed being environmentally friendly, since I knew "dollars" would be the motivating reason.

8. We are showing it on Campus at the Community College I attend...
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 11:47 AM by Blue Belle
We are using the film to promote not only global warming, but also the Focus the Nation speaking event that will take place in February. It will be shown 8 times free of charge, and a different campus club will sponser the showing. We'd like to get a Club together using many of Focus the Nations' principles, and it would be a great way to get people inolved.

10. Hey - thank YOU. And I think YOU should post a request using your personal angle...
I think it would go over quite well and we can spread it to other sites. Maybe we can ask Skinner to pin it.

9. No offense, but how about BUYING a copy?
Seems that buying a DVD (if you have a player, Home Theater, Etc.) is not such an enormous stretch.

Shit, I've got a reference copy of "Triumph of the Will." I certainly have an extra fifteen bucks for one of the most important documentaries of the generation.

RENTING is pretty damned cheap, too, but isn't some percentage of the profit on this headed to good causes?

11. I am hoping people buy EXTRA copies and donate them to libraries where some
folks DEPEND on getting their information when they have limited funds for their families.

I just returned from doing it, and the folks at the library were grateful.

17. I'm donating one to my local high school
And hoping to arrange an entire day around the issue of the climate crisis. I'm also thinking of donating my own copy for free showings in my town. We have GOT to get this movie out to as many people as we can. It is that important for the future of our planet to get people motivated to get up and take action. Together we can do it... However, just thinking a couple of politicians in DC are going to do it without any pressure from us is just not going to cut it at this point. We are the key.

Rec'd.

19. the chief librarian ran across the room to thank me ... list now 116
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 11:52 PM by Lisa
It was so great to see how excited the staff were. They've got copies on order (only a half-dozen for the whole system though) and they haven't shown up yet. I know an earlier poster was concerned about library donations possibly diverting revenue from Gore's climate charity, but it's possible that those who can afford to might decide to buy their own copies after seeing this movie. (And given how many households can't spare $20 from the grocery money, I still think it's worthwhile -- the inside jacket of the DVD even says "Watch it. Share it. Donate it." So I think Al would be cool with doing this.)

21. That's exactly the point - we can't punish those who need to make their $ stretch
I grew up in a family like that.

I think giving also inspires more giving from those who could reach into their pockets.

20. I bought 4...
1 one for my family, 2 for a raffle my son's afterschool program is having, and one for the couple who run the afterschool program.

They arrived today, and the packaging is so cool!

24. oh, and it also helps to contact a librarian beforehand ...
Ideally the person who supervises the buying (or at least has some say over the collection) -- I've noticed that things get onto the shelf much more quickly, if I give them directly to the librarian I know. She can expedite them through cataloguing.

I don't think that there would be opposition from the library board over this particular DVD, but in the past I've managed to defuse any potential criticism that I'm trying to "politicize" the collection by including items the library itself has requested, like children's movies, or regular Hollywood flicks -- along with stuff like "Bowling for Columbine". (And if the big-box-office DVDs I've submitted tend to star Tim Robbins, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, and Johnny Depp ... even the sourest conservative would have to admit that these are popular films!) My town is pretty liberal, but in the past some DUers have mentioned that they've had trouble getting donations accepted at their libraries. (Almost always it's NOT the librarians making a fuss ... they tend to oppose censorship, as we've seen from their protests against the so-called Patriot Act.)
