DOES ANYONE REALLY "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS?" A LETTER FROM A SOLDIER
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 05:09 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
EXCERPT FROM A LETTER TO MEMBERS OF THE VIETNAM VETERANS AGAINST WAR

My message as an active duty member of the military about to deploy
again is that of tenacity and perseverance. This may oversimplify the
statement; but please keep doing what you are doing! Organizations like
VVAW are desperately needed now more than ever. It seems as though this
country has made the system of checks and balances an agonizingly
painful and convoluted process. Working for citizens has apparently
taken a back seat to special interests. This is where groups like VVAW
have stepped in to pick up the slack and have consistently been the
honest broker for service members.

I respect the tenacity of my predecessors who after 40 years are
still fighting for veterans. Each generations of veterans has taken up
the torch and filled the ranks of VVAW over the years to not let this
important message die. I respect the tenacity of those in VVAW who
never served a day in uniform, yet are compelled to "serve" this country
in a different capacity.

In this day and age the rift between the military and civilians
worlds has been more pronounced as conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan
plaster the headlines. When VVAW was started, everyone had a brother,
cousin, uncle, or friend in uniform. Now, that number has dwindled so
that some one may know a "friend of a friend". Service members are
someone that Americans may see on the evening news, in an airport, or
the latest issue of Newsweek. As the American population becomes more
detached from the military, the more important it is to keep service
member's interest in sight. Service members coming back from
deployments are still facing the same mental health, VA Hospital, and
family problems they always have. I leave it to those in groups like
VVAW to keep fighting on behalf of those veterans that can't speak up
for themselves. Keep pressing this issue, and keep it in front of the
American people so they they are constantly reminded that they need to
take care of veterans long after the conflict is over.

Well, "Pilgrims" in our hurry to make progress, I have a question for you...

THE PILGRIM

WRITER KRIS KRISTOFFERSON

See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money love and dreams
Which he spent like they was going out of style
And he keeps right on a changin' for the better or the worse
And searchin' for a shrine he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse
Or if the going up is worth to coming down
He's a poet he's a picker he's a prophet he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walking contradiction partly truth and partly fiction
Taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home
He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from the devils Lord and reachin' for the stars
And losin' all he loved along the way
But if this world keeps right on turning for the better or the worse
All he ever gets is older and around
From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the hearse
The going up was worth the coming down
He's a poet he's a picker...
There's lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home

Does this sound like anyone you good folks see every day as you hurry past?

Will you join us?

1. well I'll give you a clue who that song discribes.... it's our brothers, sisters and others...
there are more than a few old soldiers who wish they'd died in 'Nam or Iraq or some other god-forsaken death-pit on certain days. In the future, if we can't learn to keep silver-spoon sucking bastards that never even served in combat -- although they DO enjoy serving up profits from death -- out of power in DC, expect to meet lots more "Pilgrims" on our "homeward" trek.

2. sorry for the fake media (staged) picture... here's an authentic one....
HEY! I was wrong, after all, it's not our "brothers and "sisters" it's our

UNCLE.

Old Uncle Sam has seen better days, hasn't he?

3. Oh, i see your point, statistics are easier to deal with than reality. here's a nice song...
Here's some lyrics I reworked for our troops when "JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME"

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
He'll sleep in a box in the alley then,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will sneer, the girls will pout,
The land-lords will quickly throw him out,
As they wait for back-pay
When Johnny comes marching home.

The older bums will steal their wine,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
As PTSD blows his mind,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village dogs and rats will prey
If he sleeps to deep to shoe them away,
But that's all okay
When Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the winter chill,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
It will cut them down like Hamburger Hill,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The funeral wreath is ready now
To place upon his wounded brow,
Will this be okay?
When Johnny comes marching home.

Let fear and sadness rule his day,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Let choicest treasures in DC stay,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
And let each one ignore their pain
As our veterans stand in the driving rain,
Is this all okay
When Johnny comes marching home?

4. Vote # 5.
I'm interested in whatever I can do in Dec re: your PM, my friend.

Happy Thanksgiving - 'We the People ...' actually have millions and millions of reasons to be thankful -- for starters, EACH OTHER!

Bob

5. I knew I could count on you Bob! YOU ARE ONE FINE PATRIOT...
I've always admired how you stand alone here at DU with your great OPs still pushing for impeachment of that draft-dodger in DC...

MY IDEA IS TO START AN EFFORT RIGHT HERE AT DU TO SEND PRESENTS TO PEOPLE IN IRAQ THAT OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT EVEN GET A LETTER

Oh yeah, the right-wing neocon war-mongers are quick to put a yellow-ribbon bumper-sticker on their car or fly a flag but I'm hoping us folks on the left can show um how SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS is REALLY done. I've got an upcoming OP that I will post on about the 5th of next month, after my appointment at the VA. I met a guy who recently returned from Iraq. The story is real but it will lack certain details to protect my source for reasons that will be obvious when you read the piece. It will be called THE LAST CHRISTMAS TREE IN IRAQ.

By the way, the Kris Kristofferson song is very powerful. Man, that guy can write...

7. YOU GOT IT DRIVER8 THANKS FOR GIVING THE IDEA WINGS...
I'm on the phone tomorrow with VVAW and whoever else we can think of that will help us get the presents to our guys and gals by Christmas. I may need to move my posting date up for THE LAST CHRISTMAS TREE IN IRAQ too.

9. OKAY after a little more thought.... we need more volunteers... let's all three PM all our DU pals..
If your friends and mine can come post here we can delegate a few duties for the ongoing effort... A VERY IMPORTANT thing I need for tomorrow is a real personal story of how ANY war influenced or effects you. Vietnam and Iraq affects more than just our troops... Even people too shy to post or write, can PM me and I'll work their stories into good copy for THEM to post, if they like... Each day someone in our group needs to get a touching story out there and let others in this effort know when it is being posted. Publicity will help our idea grow. Then, we need to expand it to other places online and in our own home towns... How's this sound to you guys so far?

13. "THE LAST CHRISTMAS TREE IN IRAQ." I humbly suggest that ...
... the concluding message of your next masterpiece be "The first of many trees planted for peace in Iraq."

I think the presents most Americans are more than prepared to send to Iraq are those that are sustainable and that can contribute to calm and reconciliation.

"We the People of the United States of America ..." are not the criminals who planned and conducted war of aggression and ordered our most honorable citizens to participate in an illegal occupation.

Those among us who did those deeds defiled every thing America represents, every aspect of what a civilization represents.

"We the People ..." will punish those who defiled America, those who killed thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens, those who brought lethal harm to our dear soldiers and enduring grief to their families.

Oh, yes, "We the People ..." will hold these criminals among us accountable as never before in history.

Count on it.

I'll do whatever I can to contribute.

Peace,

Bob

17. Great Idea.
The scale of what our troops are giving up in Iraq is beyond what I can comprehend and I feel like I need to help. Let's show the difference between support of the lip service variety and actually DOING something.

12. hey can you folks keep this kicked for an hour or so... they watched some neocon crap at moms...
and they are now ALL experts on why our troops need to stay in Iraq forever as they hunt down the Islamic Monsters... I only called to try and get a little help with our efforts to send a few Christmas presents over to Iraq for some sad Americans who will be missing home alot during the holidays. I'VE GOT A FEW TURKEYS TO FRY AT MOMS... I'll be back later.

16. "will a C47 be big enough to carry all the gifts?" my brother just asked...
He's got a cigar store in Fort Walton, FL. and knows some top brass at the base pretty well, as customers that he's treated very well over the years... He was already planning to send our troops a bunch of tobacco products for Christmas and he feels that our gifts will make a nice addition to the already arraigned humanitarian effort. Nothing definite until he returns to the beach after Thanksgiving. I had no idea of his plans before tonight... He'll either rent some storage space for our presents or set some storage up on the base with his high-ranking buddies. Please don't send perishables. Any freepers still around here can run back to Free Republican and tell them all that DU is giving them a challenge: WE'LL GET MORE GIFTS OVER TO OUR TROOPS THAN YOU GUYS CAN! I wonder if they have the guts to take us up on this contest.

18. It sounds like we are starting out on the right foot!! That is great news from
your brother.

I just want to say that getting gifts to the troops is a kick ass idea. Please let us know where to send them and what the troops might need.

I'd like to get started as soon as I can to make sure that our troops get their gifts by Christmas.

19. I'll ask my new pal who recently got back from Iraq about some affordable gift ideas...
Just be sure and include a personal note letting them know we haven't forgotten them and let them know you lean a bit to the left on politics, ESPECIALLY IF FREE-REPUBLIC TAKES UP OUR CHALLENGE but they won't... They're afraid of getting beat again like on Nov 7th. If ANYONE wants to PM me and say conservatives actually have the guts to compete with us, I swear to protect my source better than a news-writer would. A real big contest could spread this little act of kindness into other media. Start planning letters to the editor in your home papers... If anyone is established at other liberal or political sites, please start spreading the word... I'm going to still check on contingency sources for delivery of ALL gifts tomorrow... More details coming soon...

MOST OF ALL GET READY TO VOTE UP THE OP by driver8 TOMORROW MORNING AT AROUND 10AM CENTRAL... It's a personal experience from a child's perspective on the Vietnam war... I've seen the OP already and it's great!
