1. we never had a declared 37
we had bloggers claiming there were 37. We might even have had a couple of Senators claiming there were 37, but there were never 37 publicly declared votes against cloture.

6. i never saw a msm report saying 37 -- not once
In fact, it seems to me that there were several posts here on DU complaining that the MSM had basically written off the filibuster effort. As it turns out, sadly, they were right.

8. From althernet
but this was in MSM and posted here. I will try to find the masm coverage!

"It was a surprise to many that only 25 Senators voted against cloture. As of Sunday, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin told the press he had 37 of the 41 votes necessary to support a filibuster of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito."

17. The AP story may have been refering to 37 Democrats opposing
the nomination, not supporting the filibuster.

4. It's the nature of the beast
Some subscribe to the belief that if you can't win, then spin it to play both sides - essentially sailing the political winds. While useful on somethings, I don't agree with it exactly as I think it sends the wrong signals.

7. Some of the Wimps said they would vote No on confirmation
but they voted Yes on cloture. Herb Kohl did this (for one).

This is just about the slimiest, most cynical thing I've ever seen. They get to vote for Alito before they get to vote against him. Of course their no vote on confirmation is just spit in the wind. Assholes.

9. Never had 37
There were a heck of a lot of rumors flying around that were treated as fact. And from some of the reports I read here, either people were hearing what they wanted to hear from Senate staffers instead of what they were being told or the staffers themselves weren't completely keyed in to what was going on and were passing on false information.

16. I AM CONVINCED that when the time came to vote...
even though we were close, we didn't have the votes -- and they told the red-state Senators to vote yea on cloture to please their constituencies. My best example is Pryor of Arkansas. There was a strong report that he would abstain, and I personally believe that he was prepared to do that.
