Why don't Dems mount a nationwide political campaign against the right?
This article from the WSWS claims such a campaign would threaten the interests of the Democrats. A motivated, aware populace would be a threat to the corporations that own both political parties. Look at the right wing agenda. Look at the incredible crimes committed by this genuine horrible administration. Look at the near absence of serious opposition from the Opposition Party. As the article suggests, imagine the behavior of the Republicans if the situation were reversed and we had lied the nation into a disastrous criminal war, had engaged in massive corruption, and were destroying the economy for generations to come. Why nothing remotely similiar from the Democrats?

<edit>

What are the aims of the Federalist Society and the various right-wing groups that have helped pushed the Alito and Roberts nominations? They include the rollback of the welfare state, the elimination of corporate regulations, the repudiation of international law, the expansion of executive power, and the elimination of the separation of church and state. The elevation of Alito to the Supreme Court poses a serious threat to the democratic rights and social interests of the American people.

<edit>

If the Democrats were serious about opposing Alito and his extreme right-wing agenda, they would mount a political campaign among broad masses of the population. However, this is the last thing they want, for this would pose a threat to the interests the Democrats themselves support.

In spite of the declining support for the administration, the popular opposition to the war and the assault on democratic rights, the anger that has been generated due to declining living standards and growing inequality, the ballooning corruption scandal surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and the indictment of several administration officials—the Republicans are able to carry their programs through the Senate with virtually no opposition from the Democrats.

The Democratic Congressional leadership has sought to apologize for its spineless surrender by citing the Republicans’ 55-45 majority in the upper house. But there is no question that if the roles were reversed the Republicans would be far more aggressive and provocative in the minority than the Democrats have been in relationship to Bush’s agenda. Moreover, the last major action carried out by the Democrats when they did control a similarly narrow majority in the Senate was the infamous vote in October 2002 to authorize Bush to wage war on Iraq, which passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 77 to 23, a margin tellingly similar to the margin by which the Alito nomination was cleared for a final vote.

This can be explained only by the fact that the Democrats have no real opposition to the policies of war, attacks on democratic rights, the assault on social programs, and, in general, the entire policy of the American ruling class. Indeed, on all of these questions, the Democrats have facilitated the Republicans in carrying out a right-wing agenda.

2. For efforts like this to work, the media has to cover it
Three words: Al Gore's speech.

You can make all the noise in the world, and if there's no one there to hear it, you might as well be a tree falling alone in a forest.

3. Democratic leadership is quite comfortable
with the status quo, or at least 19/44 Democratic Senators have no interest in becoming the ruling party. That much became perfectly clear yesterday.

4. You mean against people like John Murtha?
They don't get more right wing than John Murtha...he's pro-school prayer, anti-reproductive choice, etc. Is that who you want to have a campaign against?

5. You've convinced me. Dem success lies in embracing school prayer
and fighting to outlaw abortion. McCain/Bayh in 2008!

6. So are you going to campaign against John Murtha?
So tell us, is John Murtha one of those you want to start a campaign against? Or is this thread just another illustration of the loony left's relentless honesty and courage (snicker)....

Hey, if there's anything to this leftist ranting besides hypocrisy, ignorance, a lynch mob's mentality and an obscene lust for power at any cost, I've yet to see it.

7. It's hopeless to fight you DLC types. You're just too damn good!
You're right! Listening to the loony left is crazy! Actually opposing the policies of the right wing would cost the Democrats control of the White House, the Congress, and the Supreme Court! Why risk losing power when we're doing so well? A million thanks to people like you for leading us to the Promised Land! McCain/Bayh in 2008!

8. Don't blame anyone else for the left's sheer hypocrisy and dishonesty....
"Actually opposing the policies of the right wing "
You mean like John Murtha's policies?

And by the way, if you want to blame somebody for the Democratic party's losses, you might look at the loony left, and the anti-American idiocies that are posted here every day. But then so few sane folks think Hillary Clinton and John Kerry are "right wing corporowhores".....

9. Yes! I see now! It's the loony left that controls the Democratic Party!
If we could just get all those leftists out of positions of power, then we could really do something. The Wellstone Dems have done enough damage. Everywhere you look, there they are calling the shots. They need to step aside and step aside now! McCain/Bayh in 2008!

It sure is a mighty fortress! I just hope you guys can take back the party from the loony left before they cost us another election! More welfare reform! McCain/Bayh in 2008!
