UN finds mass graves in DR Congo

UN investigators in the Democratic Republic of Congo say they have found mass graves with about 30 bodies in an army camp in the east of the country.

The dead included women and children who appeared to have been murdered, a UN spokesman said. He believed they had disappeared in the last few months.

The authorities have arrested two soldiers in connection with the finding in the town of Bavi in Ituri district.

1. The war the world has forgotten
Ask the person on the street what has been the deadliest conflict in the last quarter century. Few will answer The Congo.

Africa just doesn't seem to register into the calculus of the Westerner and partly due to the lack of media coverage. I've seen the yearly breakdown of news minutes on international stories and the coverage of Africa is scant. I'd say this is pretty consistent across all spectrum of media with slight variations.

What's happening throughout the African continent right now is beyond the pale and it's mostly the legacy of colonialism wedded to the ongoing resource extraction and accompanying dislocations combined with massive flows of weapons. Basically it's new age colonialism as architected by the IMF and the World Bank with the usual suspects supplying the weapons.

2. Sssshhhh! Africa doesn't exist.
That 30,000 people a month die in DR Congo is far too uncomfortable a thought for people worried about the sex lives of celebrities or the outcome of whatever "big game" was played.
