Have you ever met someone who just rubs the wrong way for no reason you can quantify? My best friend has a house guest that initiated that response in me the first time I met him, over a year ago.

My wife had the same response to the guy.

We spent Thankgiving at my best friend's house. This guy, who seems nice enough on the surface, was there. I wish I could get to the heart of what it is about him that bothers me. But something about him.

He has a pit bull, a rescue who strikes me as very fragile. The dog has none of the confidence that is part of the breed standard. This fellow is very aggressive with the dog, not to the level of abuse, but far more than I think a dog with a broken spirit should be exposed to. A dog that seems afraid needs to be built up, not dominated. At least initially.

After she first met this guy, my wife asked our friend why he was hanging around with him--his response was that no one else seemed to want to, therefore he almost felt obligated. He's like that. Hell, we're both like that.

The last person we both stood by turned out to harbor darker secrets than we could have imagined.

What do you all think? When you have these first (and second) impressions, with no concrete basis, how do you deal with it? Or do you?
