Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 10:11 AM by Viva_La_Revolution
I wasn't gonna start a thread, cause yesterday still has me all torn up but... I need my buddies around to get through this today..

CSPAN2 right now. Schumer on the Floor.

on edit: is the title too harsh? I feel so Jaded (and Hungover) this morning. :( Ok, I adjusted it.

1. Oh, I thought 2000 was the end of Democracy
This is starting to sound like the numerous Who "Farewell Tours."

Ah well, I suppose I'll just be a deluded fool and keep voting and working for progressive policies...

9. Not harsh....simple truth....
Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 10:14 AM by berner59
Schumer did a good job... Here's my hope: some rulings come up where a women's right to choose is in danger and women from far and wide stand up and fight and vote these assholes out of office... Fall elections will be the test, then these guys will regret what they did...

Hey I can dream....it's all we've got...

20. Maybe a little
I understand the judicial philosophy of Alito, I don't agree with it, but I understand it. I do know that nothing he and his brethren can do is unchangable through legislation. FDR dealt with a far more right wing court than we will have, even to the point of trying to stack the deck, and FDR made things work.

If Roe is overturned, we will have to win in the state Legislatures and in the meantime help women get to Progressive states if they need to.

If the Unitary Executive is established, we will have to gain control of Congress (which we have an excellent chance of doing, IF we don't pull a Jim Jones trick here over Alito). Alito et al will give precedence to legislation over raw execuive power grabs.

Guys like Alito are absolutely enamoured with legislative intent, with the Legislature deciding law. If we want to have a progressive society, we have to elect legislatures and executives to do so. If we cannot, then we will have to move or accept that this is a predominantly center-right country and try to carve out progressive enclaves within it.

schedule for swearing in and some back ground on the vote.

WASHINGTON - Samuel Anthony Alito Jr., the son of an Italian immigrant and a longtime lawyer, prosecutor and judge, is poised to take his place as the 110th Supreme Court justice behind what is expected to be the most partisan victory for a high court nominee in modern history.

76. Because there was no chance with the make up of the court at the
time, that it was in any real danger. It is now, depending on how long the other justices can hold out. No one knows if they will wake to a new morning. Heart attacks and car accidents happen everyday. Where they don't necessarily have the votes today, no one knows what tomorrow might bring. As long as blivet** is in the WH, we need to pray that they all enjoy good health and personal safety. Know what I mean? We don't need another seat to open up. If that happens and Specter does as he did today, he will have to answer to his district and it won't be pretty.
