For all you Online Political Junkies: Answer me these questions....
And no fair googling on the internet either!!

What party controls your local school board?

What party controls your local county/city/township government?

What party does your mayor belong to?

What party does your state Representative and senator belong to (bonus points if you can name them).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Embarrassingly I know very few of the above answers

I'm suspecting that my school board is democrat because I live in Wilmington DE and we're pretty heavily democrat in this area. I also know that my state rep/senator are both democrats but I can never remember their name. Democrats have an 8-1 majority on the Wilmington City Council (and we voted against the Patriot Act) and our governor is James Baker who is a democrat.

Point of this exercise (and why it's posted in the Alito forum incase the moderators are interested).

You want to make a difference - find out who those people are. And if they aren't democrats (or at least liberally leaning members of some party) then do something about it.

Republicans are winning because they started taking control of many of the above mentioned offices DECADES ago. Because the best way to win influence was to get the local folks on board - people who might be your neighbor or 'trusted' friend that if they told you we need the 10 Commandments on the front lawn of our Courtyard or teach Intelligent Design in our schools then we'll think it's ok because it's 'one of us telling it' and not some snazzy DC politician. Mind you, we're above this deception but not millions of people across this country who have started moving far far away from the left. Average everyday people who spend no time on the internet following politics but plenty of time listening to the neighbor telling us why another Wal-Mart in the neighborhood means only good times for all.

These local politicians have not only been numbing our minds (and I mean everyone - not just those of us here on DU) for 30+ years but they have been quite effective at numbing our children's minds, helping graduate future little republicans.

Add to that gaining control of the State House/Senates means that where republicans have failed they can redistricted the state to benefit their cause and help silent out those who once were a majority in that region.

We all need to log-off the computers and get back involved with our local politics. We will not change the political atmosphere of DC until we make the changes first here at home. Why should I waste effort to get rid of a Lieberman or Bayh when I don't even live in those states - maybe I should worry about the one Democrat in the Delaware State senate that keeps tossing HR80 into committee so he doesn't have to give rights to gays & lesbians in my state of Delaware

Back in the 70s there was a rallying cry of "Think Globally Act Locally". Today that is my rallying cry because we cannot change things globally until we first make the changes locally!

1. I'm in DC, so we play a bit differently
Mayor is a Dem

Our House of Reps presence is a Dem

I've never noticed party affiliations mentioned in school board elections.

Couldn't tell you who controls the other boards.

But being as D.C. went 90% for Kerry in 2004, I think it's safe to say Dems are well represented here.

4. GOP is the answer to all of those questions.
Sad, I know. Unfortunately the area I live in is heavy LDS, so the odds of changing that are small. My district is 2:1 GOP.

I just moved into a new house and I still know my State Legislators. Sen Jarret's big accomplishment was trying to get the law changed to require 2 license plates on cars.

I go to LD meetings, make calls, etc., but in AZ, it seems the party really doesn't care. Jim Pedersen is running for Senate and I've yet to hear anything of substance from him except fundraising emails. No op-eds, no LTTE's, no press statements. He's got a golden opportunity and he's pissing it away. Sometimes I really wonder if he's even running a campaign.

It makes me sad.

5. Okay. Here goes: School board - majority is democratic, but only
by one. City Council is not elected by party, but suspect that the majority is now Repub, based on their 'pro-business' stand. Mayor is a Democrat.

State Rep. is Democrat - Lindsley Smith ?
State senator is Democrat - Sue Madison

What party controls your local school board?

This I don't know...probably Dem, based on the following:

What party controls your local county/city/township government?

I live in a county, not in a city (unincorporated county) - Democrat

What party does your mayor belong to?

No mayor, as I'm not in a town/city, my county executive is a Dem

What party does your state Representative and senator belong to (bonus points if you can name them).

My State Representative, Barbara Fraser, is a Dem, as is my State Senator, Joan Bray.

7. This is easy.
I live in an extreme fundie area. Great Bridge Virginia.

School Board: Repuke leaning. Chairman is a fundie minister.

Local City: Repuke leaning city council

Mayor: Repuke Dalton Edge

State Rep: A real "tool" John Cosgrove R-78

State Sen: Harry Blevins R-14

I have a load of fun throwing the truth in their faces every chance I get.

Joe

9. For those of you who think "I live in a repuke area - not much I can do"
Just google Dover School Board

And I know that region very well, I grew up nearby in Perry County. The area was a republican stronghold and now the democrats control the school board after the pukes tried for force ID down everyone's throat!

14. uhmmm I know most of these answers
School board-liberal leaning with a liberal Superintendant

City is progressive - this is a liberal college town

County supervisors- two liberal, three conservative

Mayor - conservative liberal -Maureen Kirk? (I think, I am outside city limits, so don't pay too much attention to the city stuff)

Federal Rep - Wally Herger (repuke)

Federal Senators - Boxer, Feinstein

State Rep- AAnestad a repuke, area is mostly rural farming

State Senator - Keene, a repuke, our area is mostly rural farming

do I get bonus points for knowing that our governor is Schwarzenegger??

just checked my answers and found that the Mayor is Scott, and Maureen is the Vice-Mayor

15. My answers
What party controls your local school board?

We have nonpartisan elections for school board. However, most members of our school board are thought to be democrats.

What party controls your local county/city/township government?

Our county judge is a dem, as are three of the the four county commissioners. The city council is non-partisan, although practically all members are dems of one sort or another.

What party does your mayor belong to?

Our mayor claims to be an independent.

What party does your state Representative and senator belong to?

Both my state rep, Terry Keal, and my state senator, Jeff Wentworth, are repukes.
