> BACKGROUND: Rupert Murdoch's extraordinary public repudiation of his own staff members' book and TV-special plans for O.J. Simpson's "If I Did It" project has few parallels in U.S. media history. Along with generating massive amounts of negative worldwide press coverage, the debacle has also stoked debate on other less obvious aspects of its potential impact -- such as possible long-term harm to the overall broadcast industry. Some fear the incident gives ammunition to their foes. The Federal Communications Commission is reconsidering rules that determine whether media companies can own more than two TV stations in a market, as well as whether those that own radio stations and newspapers should also be allowed to own TV stations. Others suggest that even Fox's own newsrooms' senses of themselves have been altered in a way that is not in the best interests of a news company in such a highly competitive business.
