TransAlta stops mine operations at Centralia, Washington. Switches to Powder River Basin coal..

CALGARY, Alberta (Nov. 27, 2006) – TransAlta Corporation (TransAlta) (TSX: TA; NYSE: TAC) today announced it will immediately stop mining at its Centralia, Wash. coal mine. Agreements are in place to purchase and transport coal from the Powder River Basin (PRB) to fuel TransAlta’s Centralia coal-fired plant.

As a result of this decision, there will be a reduction of approximately 600 Centralia-mine related jobs.

I feel like the guy watching his mother-in-law drive over a cliff in his new car.... mixed feelings.

Strip-mine coal operation dead... good. Power plant bringing in non-union coal that costs more energy to transport... bad. 600 high-paying jobs gone from a small community of 15,000....bad. Community votes heavily Repub (so Fuck 'em).... good.

2. There's coincidentally a town in PA called Centralia, but that town was destroyed by...
what caused the town to be established in the first place: Coal. Coal mine fire has undercut the whole area now, and the town was abandoned for safety reasons.
