Applying for a job tomorrow
At a local children's home dealing with troubled teens who are there on a live-in basis. Don't really have much experience per se but the other things I've done should give me sufficient skills. Could just use a couple positive vibes thrown my way for those of you that believe in that sort of thing.

have applied at such a place. I have never applied to work with people except once when I applied with a Non profit..but took the job at the Ethan Allen instead cause I could get a GREAT discount on my furniture...NO it is a noble cause!

8. Do you have some answers rehearsed for the usual questions?
What are your weaknesses? Strengths? Give examples of how you have handled a crisis (or two?) How do you fit in with a team? etc. etc.

Have you done a bit of research on the facility? You should know something about the place. Make sure you have a question or two - it makes you appear more interested rather than just being desperate for any old job.

As someone who hires people on a regular basis, your sense of humor and a calm presence PLUS some kick ass answers, should get you past the initial first interview.

I would expect further interviews would be tailered for the job: ie. watching you working with a couple kids playing basketball or whatever would be appropriate for your position. They are going to want to make sure you have a rapport with kids to start with: troubled teens are just that much more difficult I would imagine.

Good luck!!!!

11. Monitor yourself closely for burnout and
don't try to be heroic in its (almost inevitable) face. And don't be swayed by senior admin burnouts who are still hanging on.

Don't mean to sound cynical, but IME you'll do your best work and get the best results if accept these possibilities.

Bless your heart and best of luck. You should be proud.

20. I work with the developmentally disabled
What you said it very, very true. This is precisely why we get more time off than the average worker. All I can say is; when you feel the need, TAKE IT. Even if you need to step outside for just few minutes during the day to collect your thoughts and just BREATHE.

Yes, it is a very rewarding occupation, but it can also be very stressful. If you can recognize that fact, you will do just fine. Don't try to be a superman or superwoman. When you need help, ASK FOR IT.

14. Best wishes! A couple of tips which you probably know already,
don't fidget
look the person in the eye
sit up straight
dress nice but not too formally
be honest, yourself, and confident

You will do fine! :D :toast:

23. Good luck on this, dude.
I've enjoyed your taxi reports. If this is something you think will increase your life experience, and therefore your basis (bases?) for writing, then go for it. But remember, Hemingway gave up his job with the Toronto Star newspaper because it distracted him from serious writing. Balance, but balance only on the terms of your long-term goals.
