WHICH President looks like they are ACTUALLY WORKING on their SOTU???
President Clinton, in 1999:

Clinton, actually WORKING on his speech with aides.

Dumbya today:

Came into office, sat down at EMPTY desk (as usual), staff placed a binder in front of him, open binder, take photo, close binder, end of photo-op

3. He might poke his eye out, if he had a pen.
It is safer this way.

in the background of this photo-op?

Can't DUMBYA just have a picture of Pickles back there?

8. duh ...
The answer would be Clinton, right? Just jokin'. The least the bozos at the White House can do is give Junior an acting lesson or two so he at least LOOKS like he's working (or, in this case, "reading").

Sheesh! OH! And hello to everyone on DU. First time Poster here. :hi:

Two totally different chairs. Georgie's is big and cushie...Clinton's is the opposite.

13. Good point...
Clinton would actually do WORK in the oval office where Dumbya just gets briefed all day - doesn't like to read anything longer than one page....

12. Want to see if a guy actually wrote his speech -- turn off the prompter!
Clinton was able to ad-lib his way through, when there was a computer glitch. Bush would just stand there helplessly, looking around for a copy of the goat book.

20. That is an actual true story
During one of Clinton's SOTU speeches, the teleprompter stopped working for 20 minutes. Clinton never missed a beat a spoke for the 20 minutes. The teleprompter did begin working and they were able to catch up to where Clinton was. No one in the audience had any idea that there had even been a problem. I think it was Al Gore during an interview in the days following that the information came out. Gore said he was in awe that Clinton had his speech down pat. But that can only happen if you write the speech yourself and have full grasp of what you are speaking about.

One of the biggest complaints that the telepromter programmers had with Clinton is that he would still be fine tuning his speech right up until he walked in, still working on it during his ride from the Whitehouse to the Capital. The programmers would have to add in or take out his re-writes while he was making his entrance.

I don't think that happens with this guy. One reason I watch the SOTU speeches with * is so that I can concentrate on having the teleprompter quit working and see what happens with him.

21. I remember that too...
Also, whenever President Clinton speaks, you can USUALLY hear when he goes off text, which was pretty common back in the day. Not for a lack of eloquence but he always seemed to get a little more excited when speaking from the hip.

I sometimes have to pretend being stuck with Dumbya for 8 years is just a bad BAD dream.

26. and I also bet that Clinton could use an entire 2-hour timeslot
... for a SOTU, without boring the audience and without rambling off-topic or insulting people the way Bush does when he's "speaking informally". I swear that Bush cannot say a nice thing about someone else, without either trying to steal the spotlight, or making an envious jab (like that infamous "hanging" comment to Coretta Scott King).

I know what you mean, Jeanette -- I find myself wishing that Bush's ignorance of his own speech will be revealed for all to see!

28. Me too, Jeanette. Remember the "sovereignty" speechlet?
If the teleprompter failed, he might start out like he did when he was asked about sovereignty, and it would all be DOWNHILL from there. One can only hope.

25. Not even a pen in hand
How many of you have ever gone over the final draft of a paper and not had a pen in hand. Even if it was only to make a note of something you want to especially highlight.
