Gay (Canadian) Politician Draws Ire For Brokeback Mountain Parody

(Quebec City, Quebec) A TV sketch portraying U.S. President George W. Bush's naked torso and Stephen Harper's nipples has landed Parti Quebecois Leader Andre Boisclair in hot water.

Boisclair (pictured), who was having second thoughts Wednesday about his decision to be in the sketch, appears in a TV parody of ``Brokeback Mountain'' that features caricatures of a partially naked Harper and Bush.

``I didn't see the entirety of the sketch,'' Boisclair told reporters in Quebec City. ``I did it in good faith and I think that people will judge for themselves.''

Brokeback Mountain, which tells the love story of two gay cowboys, picked up three Academy Awards at last year's Oscars.

In the sketch, the Canadian prime minister and the U.S. president are portrayed naked from the waist up in a tent. Images of their faces are attached to actors' bodies.

Bush at one point throws cherries at Harper's nipples which are covered with whipped cream.

2. I believe it's merely metaphorical.
The phrase "politics makes for strange bedfellows" is an ancient one.

11. look if you don't think these allusions to gay = bad, bush = bad,
bush = gay exist -- then you don't see it.

so it wouldn't make any sense to you.

3. there are plenty of jokes up here about Harper cozying up to Bush
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 10:10 PM by Lisa
On the English network of the CBC, one comedy show had actors portraying Harper and Bush hugging each other ... with "Harper" grabbing "Bush's" behind! The theme seems to be that Harper is making a fool of himself, by trying to cuddle up to a leader whom many Canadians fear and mistrust. I don't think it's meant to ridicule or disrespect gay people.

Personally I think the sketch sounds hilarious, and I hope Rick Mercer shows it on his program. (Having politicians take part in sometimes-racy comedy routines is a tradition in Canada, and M. Boisclair's being gay shouldn't be a factor ... the "22 Minutes" show had an assortment of politicians, gay and straight, from a variety of political parties, all sitting together in a gigantic bed!)
