Talking Points:
Because of the strength of the American people and the brave men and women who serve our country, of course the state of our union is strong. But we can do better than a special interest agenda that the Republican Congress is more than happy to rubber stamp every chance they get.

We deserve a Congress that will stand up for our interests, not the special interests. There are real challenges facing American families. From a faltering prescription drug 'benefit,' to the record-high energy prices, to health care costs, Congress has ignored the most pressing of these issues. But their past performance gives us little hope that they will abandon their special interest agenda.

Last year, Bush's agenda put special interests first and American families last as the Republican Congress rubber stamped the special interest agenda, giving billions of dollars away to their campaign contributors in the process.

During the last State of the Union Address, Bush put forward his unpopular and unsuccessful plan to privatize Social Security. It would have done nothing for the long term solvency of Social Security and would have driven the nation deeper into debt.

The Bush/Rubber Stamp Congress' agenda also included a special interest energy bill last year. The bill, which was passed by the Republican Congress, included a $14 billion giveaway to the energy companies at a time when those companies were posting record profits and American families were paying record-high gas prices.

Later in the year, the Bush administration and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress put forward the largest cut in federal student aid in history -- to the tune of $12.7 billion -- and increased the burden on student borrowers while padding the pockets of the lending companies.

They've also got quite a bit on the site devoted to "Rubber Stamp Republicans" (kinda has a ring to it, doesn't it?)

How the Rubber Stamp Congress Hurts You

Read DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel's op-ed:
"The Price of a Rubber Stamp Congress"

To put it plainly, the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress doesn't care about you. Their major legislation, engineered by the White House and Tom DeLay and rubber stamped by the Republican rank and file, appears to be little more than a quid pro quo with huge special interests -- with cynical indifference to the problems facing middle class Americans. As health care costs have continued to skyrocket, Republicans passed legislation that provided almost $140 billion in windfall profits for their donors in the pharmaceutical industry, while making it explicitly illegal for the federal government to bargain for lower prices and preventing ordinary seniors from importing FDA approved drugs from Canada at a lower cost. As millions of Americans lost their jobs in the Bush/ DeLay economy, House Republicans gave away billions in taxpayer money to special interests like Big Oil. As millions more Americans struggled to make ends meet, Republicans cut the right to overtime pay for countless workers.

On this comprehensive page, find the votes that put the Republican special interests ahead of you and your family. Each bill was a part of the culture of corruption that pervades the White House and the Republican Leadership -- find out how your local Republican rubber stamp voted.

1. More talking points -- please sign
Following on his own "Real State of the Union" Address yesterday, Wes Clark issued an email call to supporters to join him in calling Bush out on the SOTU. Please add your name and let President Bush know what he can do with his SOTU. "Enough is enough!"

General Clark to George Bush:

"As you deliver your "State of the Union" to Congress and the American people tonight, I thought I'd send you my own message about the state of our Union as well:

The state of the Union is clearly not what it should be, and not what it could be.

* Four years after 9/11, Osama Bin Laden remains on the loose and Al Qaeda remains a potent force among millions of Muslims

* The threat of terrorism has actually increased, largely as a result of the unnecessary invasion of Iraq

* In the process of our struggle against insurgents and terrorists, we are in danger of losing the very principles we are fighting for as revelations of torture undercut America's moral strength and leadership

* Highly skilled jobs in the so-called knowledge industry are moving abroad

* More than 45 million Americans lack access to health insurance

* Our physical infrastructure and our system of public education lack essential modernization and reform

* Despite over thirty years of warning, this nation still has no policy to lead us to energy independence

* The tragic incompetence of our government: failing to assist in the terrible humanitarian catastrophe of Katrina, stumbling through a repetitive cycle of inflated rhetoric and crushing disappointments with reconstruction and reform in Iraq and the Middle East, and frustrating millions of American seniors floundering through a poorly designed Medicare prescription drug program.

* The emergence of what appears to be a culture of corruption reaching from lobbyists, through the Republican leadership in Congress, and into the White House itself

The policies followed by your Administration since 9/11 -- the belligerent tone, the unilateralism, and the excessive reliance on military force -- are not making us safer; they are increasing the dangers we face abroad and distracting us from the most important challenges here at home.

The American people demand better leadership from you, President Bush. It's time to change course -- now -- and get America back on track.

Wes Clark"

It looks as if there may be a glitch in that petition site. It says to "Edit this message" but there is no message in the box to edit.

I will bookmark it and come back after I hear the speech, but thought you might want to know about the glitch.

What do you think about the site I posted in the OP?

I checked both links. Maybe somebody else can try.

I think your OP is great. The more we can hit back the better, right? I definitely plan to do it.

Edit: Wordie, the text in the box is the same as in my post - FYI

4. OK, WesDem...
The glitch must have been on my end. I tried again and there it is now.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about joining together to hit back. I see you've already declared loyalty to Clark. I'm not deciding on anyone for 2008 yet, but that's no reason we can't work together to Bash Bush...and the "Rubberstamp Republicans."

I just love that term! I'll say it again:

Rubberstamp Republicans!

(Whew, that felt good!)
