Talking Points:
Because of the strength of the American people and the brave men and women who serve our country, of course the state of our union is strong. But we can do better than a special interest agenda that the Republican Congress is more than happy to rubber stamp every chance they get.
We deserve a Congress that will stand up for our interests, not the special interests. There are real challenges facing American families. From a faltering prescription drug 'benefit,' to the record-high energy prices, to health care costs, Congress has ignored the most pressing of these issues. But their past performance gives us little hope that they will abandon their special interest agenda.
Last year, Bush's agenda put special interests first and American families last as the Republican Congress rubber stamped the special interest agenda, giving billions of dollars away to their campaign contributors in the process.
During the last State of the Union Address, Bush put forward his unpopular and unsuccessful plan to privatize Social Security. It would have done nothing for the long term solvency of Social Security and would have driven the nation deeper into debt.
The Bush/Rubber Stamp Congress' agenda also included a special interest energy bill last year. The bill, which was passed by the Republican Congress, included a $14 billion giveaway to the energy companies at a time when those companies were posting record profits and American families were paying record-high gas prices.
Later in the year, the Bush administration and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress put forward the largest cut in federal student aid in history -- to the tune of $12.7 billion -- and increased the burden on student borrowers while padding the pockets of the lending companies.
They've also got quite a bit on the site devoted to "Rubber Stamp Republicans" (kinda has a ring to it, doesn't it?)
How the Rubber Stamp Congress Hurts You
Read DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel's op-ed:
"The Price of a Rubber Stamp Congress"
To put it plainly, the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress doesn't care about you. Their major legislation, engineered by the White House and Tom DeLay and rubber stamped by the Republican rank and file, appears to be little more than a quid pro quo with huge special interests -- with cynical indifference to the problems facing middle class Americans. As health care costs have continued to skyrocket, Republicans passed legislation that provided almost $140 billion in windfall profits for their donors in the pharmaceutical industry, while making it explicitly illegal for the federal government to bargain for lower prices and preventing ordinary seniors from importing FDA approved drugs from Canada at a lower cost. As millions of Americans lost their jobs in the Bush/ DeLay economy, House Republicans gave away billions in taxpayer money to special interests like Big Oil. As millions more Americans struggled to make ends meet, Republicans cut the right to overtime pay for countless workers.
On this comprehensive page, find the votes that put the Republican special interests ahead of you and your family. Each bill was a part of the culture of corruption that pervades the White House and the Republican Leadership -- find out how your local Republican rubber stamp voted.
