Who broke the internets?
I'm logged in from an emergency AOL account because DU is dead to me -- literally -- from my broadband connection, and I know I'm not the only one who can't get in through a normal, grown-up connection. Likewise, I can't reach yahoo.com.

Hear tell there's a break in a backbone (which network, I'm not sure, but obviously not AOL's) in McLean, VA.

Anyone know what's going on?

no worries for me, but my broadband phone connection is fluky...
...for long distance calls-- the first time in over three years I've had less than perfect service.

2. Perhaps you haven't heard, but
" . . . the Internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."

:hi:

28. Dump truck internets
were always better. I wish we could go back to them. The tube internets just aren't as good as the ol' dump trucks.

4. Almost all of the links at yahoo are screwed up too
when I click on the link for a story, I get a link that looks like they left out a html tage somewhere because it is way too long and leads to a dead/can't find server page. My broadband seems to be working for me, but yahoo is not.

7. Just out of curiosity...
Everyone having problems: What part of the country are you in?

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area (and a couple of people I know who can't get into DU are on the West Coast, too).

I have no idea why Yahoo would route through Virginia -- but I expect DU must be "walled" off to us westerners by virtue of proximity to McLean.

(...whereas AOL is in McLean.)

And they were led by Nancy Pelosi.

11. Hmm, uu.net is showing 100% packet loss
http://weather.ucr.edu/

And, on this other traffic report, there are a couple nodes showing 100% packet loss, mostly in Florida and Texas, but some in Wisconsin and Michigan.
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/namerica.htm

So, yes, someone broke something.

16. I've had serious issues this week
I thought it was my DSL connection, but as backup I also have cable modem and I am noticing what appears to me to be a concerted effort to slow the system down. I would not put it past this gov't to do this given Gingrich's call for restricting the internet due to "terrorism". We know it's a crock but damn! they hate it when we talk to each other and ignore their stupid talkin' points!! If someone is complicit in this, sue their butts!

19. we had about two hours of off and on service both net and cable
we were attributing it to the snow, though the snow is not really coming down that heavy. or the wind, though we have had worse. but has been up and fine for a half hour

20. Isn't that just a coinky-dink
Create enough backbone bottles for folks, and the wealthier ones will start clamoring for the elite tubes the phone company has been insisting they have to have to keep the internet running smoothly.

31. I've given up bouncing the modem when something goes wrong.
I should know better than to bother -- I used to be a help-desk slave too, and we'd give customers anything to do just to keep them busy until we figured out what the real problem was. LOL

32. From what I understand...
Something barfed back east ("barfed" being the technical term, of course). I figure some stoned sysadmin spilled a Coke in the back of a server.

And, btw, everything is back to normal now, more or less. Yay!

AOL is a CONTENT provider not an internet provider. They can limit your access at will.

29. EMERGENCY account, I said, EMERGENCY account!
I keep it for my sister, whom I haven't yet been able to wean off AOL and onto a real provider. And then I steal it from her at times like this. LOL

Actually, I'm one of the very few people on the planet who's happy zipping along with Comcast broadband.
