Poll question: Which will be the LAST diversity barrier to fall in the US Presidency?
We're getting pretty close to having a potential black or female president. And many would argue that we currently have a mentally challenged president.

Assuming our country survives the next 2 years, what will be the last bit of diversity to gain acceptance in future Presidential elections?

1. Can't decide between an openly gay pres and an atheist...
both have a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected in the foreseeable future

7. I was thinking along the same lines.
I think I might be more inclined to the think an openly gay person might have it worse, but then I read what is written about atheists, and I just don't know.

2. The US will degenerate into a dictatorship long before an Atheist wins office
Then, it will further degenerate into warlordism. I have history backing up my rhetoric. Just look how Rome turned from a Republic into an Empire before falling.

3. From a survey I saw not too long ago, atheism had the highest negatives

...and not just by a little, either. It was ranked about as highly as Satanism on the scale of things that would cause USicans not to vote for a candidate.

Not too surprising, given the concentration of religious fanatics in this country -- although as an agnostic/atheist myself, I do find it annoying.

5. Gay! This is the homophobic USA-USA!-You-S-A!
Sad but true, the southern talibornigan would vote for any dogfucking, wife-beating, thieving, cold-blooded mass-murderer before they would cast a ballot for a gay man.

8. Gay and atheist are probably equally unlikely. I chose gay by a hair.
I think we are seeing a large number of Americans questioning religion, becoming agnostics, attending places of worship but not believing, and calling themselves "Christian" just because their parents said so.

Yet the numbers don't lie - the faithful are dwindling rapidly, and I have a hunch we're slightly more likely to see an agnostic/non-religious/atheist president than an openly homosexual one.

Then again, there are homosexuals currently in the US Congress, and from what I've noticed, zero atheists. So I could be wrong.

9. I'd have to say the homosexual barrier.
Why doesn't FDR count as disabled?

10. A Minor Correction :)
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 02:28 AM by David 1981
We've already had a short president.

The fourth President of the United States, James Madison, was 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Hope this helps :)

Correction: Wrong inch quoted on Madison. Madison was indeed the shortest president, however..

16. Good pt -- but things are different now with TV
I doubt Madison would make it through the primaries today.
