Oaxaca Resistance Crushed! Radio APPO stops transmitting
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 04:22 PM by newyawker99

Meet The New Boss. Same As The Old Boss

Since Friday, the peaceful (mostly) resistance of the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca
has been violently crushed. What leaders that have not been arrested are now in hiding.

Over 200 have been arrested using blank arrest warrants, most beaten and tortured then shipped to distant
prisons in far flung sections of the country without contact with family or access to attorneys. Human rights organizations have reported rapes of women prisoners. Many others are simply disappeared. This has happened since infiltrated provocateurs and instigators provoked a military response to an otherwise peaceful demonstration last Saturday.

The last barricade, at the intersection Cinco Senores outside the university whose radio station has been the voice of the resistance, fell at 4:30 am yesterday. As the radio station was thus unprotected and an invasion
of Federal forces was immanent, the decision was made to cease operations and turn the station
over to university officials. At this time it is not known the fate of the announcers who have all
had arrest warrants issued for them.

Although the movement has been seriously damaged and been driven underground, it will go on.
Money is being raised through RadioTupa.org for the equipment to launch a pirate station
to replace Radio Universidad. I sure hope DUers can find it in their heart to help.

Tommorrow, december 1, a new mexican president will be installed as the result of an obviously
fraudulent election. Already the mexican congress is torn apart by brawls and fistfights on the floor
as well as an ongoing sleep-in to prevent takeover by rival parties.

A massive demonstration is planned in the central sqaure of Mexico City to protest the inauguration.

What follows is a crude babelfish translation of two news article concerning the situation in Oaxaca
that I found on the website of Lopez Obrador, the legitimate president of Mexico. Al Gore and JohnKerry have company now.

4. The Arrest of Gerardo Bonilla: Acclaimed Muralist Among Oaxaca's Disappeared
November 30, 2006

The Arrest of Gerardo Bonilla
Acclaimed Muralist Among Oaxaca's Disappeared
By CounterPunch News Service

The impact of Oaxaca, Mexico's struggle is hitting home. Gerardo Bonilla, painter and friend of many in the Austin artistic, activist, and student communities, was one of 149 arrested this past Saturday in a federal police sweep of Oaxaca city that is increasingly targeting the impoverished southern state's artists and writers.....
(snip)

.....Last Monday the tension in Oaxaca increased when the Federal police (PFP) announced a "zero tolerance" policy against APPO members and their sympathizers.

Now police are searching and ransacking houses and buildings searching for activists. On Saturday November 25th Bonilla was standing in la Plaza de la Bastida where he often sells his paintings. Like many others on this day he was randomly swept up as the police came through the area arresting >everyone in sight. He has been flown to a maximum security prison outside the state of Oaxaca in Tamaulipas where he is being held with out due process or outside access. This event typifies the strategy that is currently taking place in Oaxaca. Since last Saturday there have been at least three confirmed deaths, more than 100 injured people, and 221 arrests - including 41 women.

This Thursday, November 30, many Austinites, including Bonilla's many friends here, will demand freedom for Bonilla as well as the hundreds of detained and disappeared. This is the fourth in a series of consulate protests against Mexican state violence; the first protest followed the May attacks on flower vendors in Atenco, near Mexico city. On Friday December 1 the new Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, will be sworn in, despite widespread political instability.

10. Thank you for this news! Been looking everywhere for any update.
Been following the iteration translation and could see that the radio was in precarious position, night before last.

The world is still watching.

Ironically, with the suspicious burning of those federal offices, our local news finally did a report on the situation in Oaxaca, stating that students were being sent back to the states for their own safety. Not a word had been said all of this time, previous to those fires.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/294006_flee29.html

All I can do is send my wishes of strength and victory for those incarcerated and at risk in this battle; the federales may think they have succeeded in restoring power and Ruis comfortable in his control of that state, but the struggle has not died and it's the people fighting the repression who are making the history of freedom for Oaxaca.

Alberto Cilia Ocampo, a thin 21-year-old university student and regional

Little did he know that within hours of his arrival, he would become the
next case.

At 4 p.m. Monday, hooded state police officers grabbed Cilia off the
street together with Sarah Weldon, a 22-year-old French university student
and Omar Rodríguez Camarena, a 28-year-old graduate student in history,
and whisked them off in the back of a state police pickup truck.

"I saw two guys wearing ski masks approach me. They grabbed my head,
slapped me in the face, forced me down and put a hood over my head," Cilia
said through the metal grating of the state penitentiary in Ixcotel.

17. Poor people have always had to fight against a stacked system.
The list of defeats for the poor is long, painfully long. Such is the power of state oppression and the corrupt oligarchs who run the machinery of the state.

The only consolation is that poor people always rise up again no matter how many times they've been beaten down or smashed down. I hope Gov. Luis will spend the rest of his days living in fear of the people he was supposed to represent and protect. Instead, he beat them down and exploited them.

I simply put it through babelfish

The decision to repress violently to the members of the APPO cannot be considered the undesirable but direct result of the facts of the last Saturday. Rather, according to the evidences of witnesses gathered in situ by means, we are before the consumation of a calculated strategy to eliminate of a edge the civil resistance in Oaxaca before the change of federal government, impelled to show which will be from now on the "philosophy" of the new Executive, once surpassed the stumbling blocks of announced Black Friday who today concentrates all the glances of the national and international public opinion, as well as the worse doubts about the real operation of our immature democracy. The previous declarations of Ulises governor Ruiz affirming that the things were on the verge of being solved in Oaxaca, the graceful one fled from president Fox and Abascal secretary to deny the federal responsibility in the crisis, as well as the announced appointment of the ex- governor of Jalisco like next secretary of Interior, already foretold the announcement of the policy of zero tolerance imposed with all the force of the State, eufemismo that describes the indiscriminate use of tolete and the gun gas release device and the amplest connivencia between the uncontrolled local police forces and the great apparatus of federal containment arrived at Oaxaca to guarantee the "order" in the city. For the foxista government, whose anticipated exit nobody cries, the failure oaxaqueño is another one of the many accumulated ones in its long file of errors, mistakes and deviations, the last test that, in a certain sense, the years of the alternancia, instead of consolidating the democracy, have served to aggravate the national crisis, deepening the divisions arisen from not recognized decomposition of the old institutions of the regime, as well as of the manifest insensibilidad of great part of elites to include/understand the mood of ample layers of the population which, by diverse circumstances, the margin of the modernization has had left or has been excluded of the electoral democratic game, while their necessities and demands, of mere sobreexperience or recognized political spaces, grow in geometric proportion to the irrespirables deficiencies of their social surroundings, in spite of the resource of the emigration or to the application of attendance programs that, really, do not touch the causes of the inequality nor do not modify the local authoritarianism either. While the legislators dispute by the possession of the tribune of the Congress like symbolic space of the political confrontation, in Oaxaca the right state transfigura in which really he is: a fantasy whose final destiny seems to be the one to justify the illegal performance of a power exerted from greater impunity, able to extract of the stopped local jails to whose identities are hidden, to make arbitrary casts, prospections for "raising" to the suspects of some class of participation in the street battles of the historical center of the city. The images of the prisoners forming "prudent" to be transferred to penitentiaries are frightening. A relative described therefore the scene: "the men (they went) brutally struck and all, until the newlywed and bent women, in the row to raise the helicopter". Once again, the solution imposed by the authority reveals the scorn that to the bodies of security of the State (and to the Public Ministry) deserve these citizens to them and the law that do not get tired to invoke. Really, in cases as these there is no innocence presumption that is worth, because already they have been classified previously like "highly dangerous", before the absence of the National Commission of Human rights. The only information available is that, between the deported ones, they are 107 men and 34 women. The objective, nevertheless, jumps at sight: one looks for to leave without a leader the movement putting to the jail to the leaders and activists of the APPO, to seed the fear between the population and, paradoxicalally, to save the head of Ulises Ruiz while this one serves to fortify the commitment not very smooth, but obviously already subscribed between the flat elect president and the greater one of the priísmo. There will be who in the analysis of the last events, at least from the return of the teachers to classes and the explosions happened in the Federal District, puts on the rug the opportunity of the tactics of the popular movement, in individual the idea to surround pacifically to the forces of the order, and comprobables excesses that would not have to happen unnoticed, but in the final balance there are questions that cannot be eluded. The greater political responsibility by the happened thing in Oaxaca corresponds to the local government and the federal government whom all the possible one did so that the problem rotted before looking for a right solution. The same it can say of the parliamentary groups of the BREAD and the PRI in the Senate, which, for different reasons, sabotaged the possibility of the exit of Ulises Ruiz, who remained in the position thanks to that conspiracy masked in the national defense of right, Creel dixit. The legal, political and pacific route was rejected in favor of the gangster negotiation between the capos of both parties. The democratic transparency along with sank the credibility of the heads of both parliamentary groups. Elect president Felipe Calderón wanted to still appear to the margin of these actions, but the logic indicates that Fox would not have made the decision to repress without the agreement of its successor. The stupor whereupon was not received the appointment of Francisco Ramirez Coins like secretary of Interior is not accidental, like is not it, either, the message that in spite of all the aseptic opinions it wanted to send Calderón, in the sense that from now on there will be order in the Republic and it forces in the application of the law. , in a wireless declaration, just named secretary of Interior it was as well frightened the flies of the authoritarianism saying that during his management "there will be hand signs but hand does not last" and "that with serious and responsible work can be restituted La Paz in the country." Pretty declaration to begin a government who must face the political polarization; the direct war of the organized crime, the recession announced by Carstens secretary, the institutional crisis and the administrative confusion of the government, the increasing malaise of million that emigrate to the north and run into with special walls, deserts and arms, in short, when more lack would make in the presidential house (and the parties) a vision of State we ran into with the struggle by the tribune of the Congress and desire to satisfy at all costs the outcries of those who requests that the performances of Ramirez Coin against the tortured altermundistas is the new currency of the government. Naturally, the left opposition is forced to put other guidelines, without concessions, but without falling in the garlito to which they want to take it its adversaries to turn it I inform expiatorio of its own miseries. posted by Arming to Garcia Medina AT 9:16 A.M. | 0 comments SPURIOUS FECAL PELELE MEXICO PRESIDENT madrugan to Him to Segob with a manifestation Members of Civil Resistance protest by the delay to the solution of the conflict in Oaxaca By Javier Quintero. "I saw two guys wearing ski masks approach me. They grabbed my head, slapped me in the face, forced me down and put a hood over my head," Cilia said through the metal grating of the state penitentiary in Ixcotel.

For the next 46 hours, Cilia and his two friends would live what they had come only to bear witness to: torture, interrogations, constant relocations between various state holding facilities, forced confessions, and ultimately trumped up charges.
(snip)

Weldon, however, is still incommunicado. Her lawyers said officials from the National Immigration Institute would not let them speak with or see Weldon, nor would they confirm her whereabouts. The lawyers are preparing an injunction to prevent Weldon´s deportation.

In Ixcotel, both Alberto Cilia and Rodríguez were in good spirits and had few visible signs of torture on their faces. They testified that they had been hooded, slapped, stepped on, had a burning liquid poured on their backs and were threatened with electrocution.

Throughout their beatings, police constantly threatened both men with death saying they would cut up their bodies and mail the parts off to various relatives, the men said.
(snip)

Cilia said state police forced them to sign false confessions, including that APPO leader Flavio Sosa had paid them 50 dollars to make Molotov cocktails.
