Thank all the courageous Senators...free online fax/email site. Easy.
Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 07:18 PM by Wordie
Let's send our thanks to those who stood up for our country and our liberties.

At the bottom of this post is a list of the Senators who stood up in support of the filibuster of Alito's confirmation, by voting "NO" on cloture in the Senate yesterday (and the one abstention is also included). By using the link below, you can write one email or FAX message and send it to all these courageous Senators, thanking them for their stand for liberty and our Constitution.

I've included two additional Senators to the list of the Democratic Senators who voted "NO." One was Jim Jefford (I-ME), an Independent, who voted against cloture. The other is Senator Harkin (D-IA), who abstained. I added him because he may have responded to the effort to encourage Senators to simply abstain from voting on cloture (an abstention was as effective as a "NO" vote in preventing the pro-Alito forces from obtaining cloture). For that reason, Harkin may deserve our thanks as well, although his action was not in the same league as the ones who voted "NO." If you don't want to send a message to either or both of these Senators, simply use the "Select All Recipients" link to reveal the entire list, and deselect the name(s) by clicking on theadjacent checkbox.

IMPORTANT! Remember, using this link means you don't need to take the time to write individual messages, but can write only ONE message, and click just once to send it to all the Senators on the list, all at once. But, if you would prefer, it also allows you to write personalized messages to each individual Senator, by using the "Select All Recipients" link and the checkboxes to the right of the Senator's names. You can select the Senators one at a time for individual messages. It's up to you and it's really easy.

Use the radio buttons to select whether your message will be sent by email (the default) or FAX. I'd like to recommend the email option, as these Senator's FAX machines have already been overwhelmed with FAXes. This site requires javascript, and will send your FAXes over the internet - no need to log off to send them.

Note that this site also includes a search function with which you can easily look up the addresses to the Senator's offices, should you want to send a donation as an expression of thanks. Use the "Elected Officials" tab, then enter the Senator's name (you really don't need to fill out the zip and other info) and hit ENTER. Then click on the Senators name and you'll get a page with contact and other pertinant info about the Senator.

3. Jeffords (I-ME) and Harkin (D-IA) are included.

Jeffords should be thanked, too, imho. He voted "NO" along with the Dems.

And Harkins abstained. In the cloture vote on Alito, that was as good as a "NO," and since a lot of us were encouraging that as an alternative, I decided to include him. It wasn't as good as a "NO," but it was an action on the right side of things.

But if anyone doesn't want to include them for any reason, they can be deselected from the list.

This should be on the greatest page. It's such an easy way to send out a thank you and it's something we all should do. And you're right about the other two senators, I don't think the mass mailer from MoveOn includes them.

10. Thanks, samhsarah. People can write individual messages to each Senator,
if they want, using this site too. It can be done either way - write one message or write individual ones - depending on how much time and energy the person has.

An individual message to each would of course be the best, especially to those who really led the fight, like Kerry and Kennedy. And there were others whose support was so important, like Feinstein, who changed her mind and decided to stand with the filibuster, and Durbin, who gave a magnificent speech.

Just now I heard a reporter on CNN refer to Kerry's filubuster effort as "quixotic." It pains me that so many seem unaware of how risky the filibuster effort was, and how much we owe them for taking this courageous stand.

14. Yeah, it's pretty cool. There's another tab at the top,
"Elected Officials" through which you can find out a lot about the people who represent you. It has all the basics, like addresses (D.C. and local) and phone numbers, but it also tells you what committees your rep sits on, and other background information.

18. I'm sorry - I will NOT THANK THOSE VOTING FOR CLOTURE
and my fax yesterday told them that while I had supported them in the past, I will now support any progressive Dem who opposes them - and with money too!

I will thank ONLY those that supported the American people by voting against cloture AND Scalito.
