I'm giving the dem rebuttal..
to the SOTU tonight for our local newspaper. They just called ten minutes ago, and I haven't had any time to prepare. I've got about 30 minutes before I have to leave. If anyone has any ideas for sound bite responses to terrorism and whatever else he's liable to discuss, please share them with me!

Thanks in advance!

1. he lied to get us into this war and is still lying ......
no link between Iraq and 9 -11 and yet he keeps talking about Iraq
and 9 -11 in the same breath .... that is no accident.

25. Right
Even the 9/11 Commission states there is no link. And I saw a bumper sticker of this sometime late last year: "When Clinton lied nobody died."

3. Here's a nice start:
- Why is Osama bin Laden still alive, safe and issuing threats?
- Why has Exxon just posted the highest quarterly profits for any U.S. company ever after "necessarily" raising gasoline prices above $3 a gallon?
- Why has our economic expansion completely stagnated?
- Why is Bush lying about the efficiency of the FISA court for obtaining surveillance warrants?
- Why was a well-documented liar just appointed to the Supreme Court?
- Why do 40 million Americans have no health coverage?

6. I can give the rebuttal in advance:
"Other than this speech being filled with lies, inconsistencies, lapses in logic that a third-grader would notice, jingoistic dangerous bullshit that eviudences a very clear misunderstanding of the Constitution and the rest of our nation's laws as well as a complete and utter ignorance and disregard of history, current events, and a complete inability to synthesize data, as well as offering an interpretation of the Christian faith that is so far into the realm of speculative fiction that even Isaac Asimov is sporting a boner at the creativity, and is offering an extremely dangerously ignorant vision of international policies that will surely lead us and most of the world into destruction at the hands of religionists who are just as deranged and fatally fundamentalist as himself, his use of noun determiners was spot on, he hardly ever split an infinitive, and he managed not to drool on himself."

7. You may want to bring up Bush's new observation that the United States...
should not be so dependant on forgein oil - then forgets how his family earned their wealth, who his Father works for (the Carlysle Group), who his cronies are and who he sets policy for(big Oil), and the real reason we are in Iraq (our oil is under their sand).

8. Here is a good one from Think progress:
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/01/31/sotu-deja-vu/

Bush is saying tonight he wants to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, he has said this in every SOTU since 2000 but it is just empty rhetoric. Since 2000 America's dependence on foreign oil has increased from 58% to 66%.

16. found this on raw story
and supposedly it's an excerpt from tonights speech. Any thoughts on the best response to this nonsense?

"Abroad, our Nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal - we seek the end of tyranny in our world... the future security of America depends on it."

"In a time of testing, we cannot find security by abandoning our commitments and retreating within our borders. If we were to leave these vicious attackers alone, they would not leave us alone. They would simply move the battlefield to our own shores."

"...Ultimately, the only way to defeat the terrorists is to defeat their dark vision of hatred and fear by offering the hopeful alternative of political freedom and peaceful change."

Reply - The killing of innocents as "collateral damage" is not "peaceful change".

Reply - The choices we make today extend beyond our world. The choices we make today affect our children and our children's children.

"In a time of testing, we cannot find security by abandoning our commitments and retreating within our borders. If we were to leave these vicious attackers alone, they would not leave us alone. They would simply move the battlefield to our own shores."

Reply - We must meet our commitments at home. While this war has raged, federal and state governments have ravaged social services, healthcare, educational programs and infrastructure. The war against Iraq has been a disaster for the US and Iraq, and a disgrace for our nation. The US did not have justification to invade Iraq, and we have no confidence that continued occupation by the US will improve the situation, much less lead to a democratic Iraq.

The Reply (except for the first sentence) is taken from the Louisiana NAACP Resolution calling for an immediate end to the Iraq war, written with the help of Traprock Peace Center, Charlie Jenks.

28. here ya go! and thanks again for all your help!!
http://sedaliademocrat.com/285309428391361.htm

The paper copy of the newspaper also had a graph and a questionnaire thing from each of us that isn't included in the online version, but this is most of the article.

They wound up doing a panel thing, and it turned into a really lively discussion. The 'post sotu' stuff lasted about two hours, but only a few of the statements actually made the article. Most of the DU suggestions didn't show up in the paper, but all of them came in handy during the discussion itself, so thanks again!!
