<snip>

This appears to the worst of governance by commission.

Instead of a real plan for withdrawal or renewed engagment or partition or anything with boldness and vision, we get a wishy-washy call for redeployment of some kind — which could mean as little as a retreat to U.S. bases inside Iraq — over a period of time, which is also not specified.

“It is neither ‘cut and run’ nor ‘stay the course,’ ” one commission staffer told the New York Times, proudly.

No, it’s more like “fray and jog.” We’re still yoked to Iraq, but we’re not fully committed to staying or going. Just inching our way toward the door, maybe.

It’s unsurprising that Bush immediately recommitted America to “stay the course.”
