Grandma convicted of hauling pot to support her Bingo habit
Grandma convicted of hauling 214 pounds of pot in Arizona; prosecutor blames her bingo habit

Dec 1, 2006 12:20 PM

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) -- A grandmother found with a trunkful of marijuana was convicted of drug running in what prosecutors said was an attempt to earn cash for a bingo habit.

State troopers found 10 bundles of pot totaling 214 pounds hidden in Leticia Villareal Garcia's car trunk last year when they stopped her outside Bisbee, in far southeastern Arizona.

Villareal, 61, told jurors before they convicted her Thursday that her only regular income was a $275 monthly welfare check, but she frequently played bingo and occasionally won thousands of dollars.

1. When children and little old ladies repeatedly fall afoul of the law,
which is the more foul: they, or the law?

4. What we need is a war on bingo!
How long are we going to let this silent killer strike?

Wait - Bingo's not silent is it? OK How long are we going to let this noisy killer strike?

Has Bingo killed anybody? Screw it - we'll come up with a slogan later, just trust us - War on Bingo!

6. Hey I have worked at a bingo parlor and believe me, some of those bingo grandmas
are nuts. They will lie, cheat, and yes, steal. Give you a ten and tell you it was a twenty when you make change. I learned to keep the bill they gave me in my other hand (a good practice anyway) until after I made the change. I had one lady grab a whole stack of Las Vegas cards off the counter when she thought I wasn't watching. And this was a Catholic charity bingo. Fortunately most were not that way but were there just for the entertainment.
