NCLB is ruining our schools...Truancy is a major cause of schools not making AYP |
|
AYP is average yearly progress.
everyone is so quick to blame teachers and school when they don't meet AYP, but the truth is, even if all test scores were passed at gigantic levels, attendance could keep a school from making AYP and then the teachers get the blame for "bad" schools

3. ummmmm I teach in a Title 1 school with massive immigrant amounts |
|
and because everyone all likes to go to mexico or california and not go to school we will NEVER make AYP and had to send a letter last week telling parents they could transfer their child from a "bad" school to a good one
I live it every day and work my ass off and for people to blame teachers is wrong.
People need to walk a mile before they talk crap

9. We drop them when they are gone 3 days |
|
3 days and you are out in our district. So when they go back to Mexico, they can't automatically come back to the same school. My principal drops them after one day when she knows they have left town. That saves our butt on attendance.
The thing that pisses me off is when the kids do come back, 99% of the time they didn't go to school while they were gone. So we may not get penalized for poor attendance but we have to play catch up to get them back to where they were academically when they left.

Attendance is now part of AYP. Last year the minimum was 94%. I think it goes up to 95% this year. That means school wide attendance for the year.

2. NCLB's sole agenda is the destruction of public schools so that |
|
vouchers for private Christian fundamentalist schools would finally be accepted.

Vouchers for corporation-owned private schools. It's about the transfer of public funds to private interests. Like absofuckinglutely everything that they do.
Can't you see it? Halliburton Elementary School. Has a creepy ring, don't you think? Training their own cannon-fodder.

Beginning last year, attendance is now included in AYP. We had several schools in our district that didn't make AYP last year strictly because of attendance. Their test scores were fine.
This is actually the only part of NCLB I approve of. Truancy is a big problem in my school district. Now that attendance really matters, the district will have to address this problem.
I also believe we will see all kinds of innovative attendance incentives. And for those parents who think they can keep their kids home anytime they want, that nonsense is OVER.

10. You all need to drop them like we do |
|
It has definitely cut back on all those trips back to Mexico. They don't like to come back and have to put their kids in new schools. So fewer and fewer go back to Mexico for all the holidays.

They come in and tell you they are moving and they leave early by refusing to follow the rules or do their work.

16. I can't think of one single thing I like about NCLB |
|
The only indecisive opinion I have regarding NCLB is whether I want to refer to it as a War on Children or a War on Education. Tough call.
