Le Plot Thickens Part 4-Larisa Alexandrovna On Russian Spy Poisoning
Le Plot Thickens: Part 4

Major development:

Like I said, this will be traced to FSB and no higher because Putin's fingerprints won't be found. This is called plausible denial. That said, the Polonium would have had to have been authorized higher up the FSB team of assassins and terrorist bombers. Read the latest from the Guardian:

"British intelligence sources increasingly suspect that Alexander Litvinenko, the former spy killed with a radioactive poison, was the victim of a plot involving "rogue elements" within the Russian state, the Guardian has learned.

While ruling out any official involvement by Vladimir Putin's government, investigators believe that only those with access to state nuclear laboratories could have mounted such a sophisticated plot."

And here is me:

"My own feeling continues to be that Putin is the "author" of this script and the authorities are tracking the "actors."

<snip>

But I am really thinking that we are looking at a 3 man team. I suspect FSB agents and Mario are the "actors." I also suspect that direct evidence tying Putin to these murders will never be found, for many reasons, not the least of which is that people at the top always set up plausible denial."

1. I am struck by the fact--and it seems quote notable to me--that it was
the job of Valerie Plame and her Brewster-Jennings network of covert agents/contacts around the world, to keep track of items like polonium. It was a counter-proliferation network, in particular focused on the disposition of Russian nuclear materials and on WMDs in the Middle East.

But of course the Bush Junta smashed that all up--and likely got some of our counter-proliferation agents/contacts killed.

This is the consequence. People have jars of polonium to pass around, not just killing their target, but endangering many people.

Why aren't Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld on trial for treason?

2. Why Indeed!
to get the quantities of polonium that are needed to kill someone, you would need access to a lot of nuclear material

Brewster Jennings was exposed by those asswipes in the Bush junta

so who is watching that kind of thing? apparently Putin or his underlings are

Larisa is sticking her neck out I think covering this stuff in a way as she was born in the Ukraine and well, I don't know, I just think that there is some bravery with her as she is covering this so closely.

3. The amount of polonium required to kill someone would be less than 2 grains of salt
It's not a huge amount. And polonium is found in a lot of common household things (NPR did a special on this and the reporter went to a camera store and got a lens cleaner that had polonium in it, for example).

BUT nobody ever ingests the stuff - and 2 grains of salt worth of polonium means someone purposefully planted it (even though it looks to be such a small amount).

I think the larger issue really does revolve around whodunnit, not the quantity or initial source. Polonium is out there, it's commercially available, and easily accessible but someone had an evil motive with the Russian spy for sure.

6. It was weapons grade polonium--polonium-210.
As for Koko01's question, why would they leave such a trail? I can think of lots accidental things that could happen in a plot to use weapons-grade polonium. First perp gets sick, for one thing. So second perp takes over. Scientist too scared, backs out. Someone carrying the stuff gets killed or waylaid. Instructions on how to handle it get lost in the shuffle.

Hard to say, at this point. But the apparent chaos does not mean that it didn't start out as sophisticated plot.

4. How can it be a "sophisticated plot" when it was traced and there are
planes and buildings being inspected for the Polonium and two other people are infected with it? The victims wife and another person who met with him at the Sushi Bar?

Someone wanted the Polonium to be traced...Who would do such a blatent "killing" that would track back with such a huge hunt from world organizations?
