Rumsfeld Urged Major Changes in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Saturday he wants to hear all advice before making decisions about changes in Iraq strategy, even as it was disclosed that Donald H. Rumsfeld called for major changes in tactics two days before he resigned as defense secretary.
"In my view it is time for a major adjustment," Rumsfeld wrote in a Nov. 6 memo to the White House. "Clearly, what U.S. forces are currently doing in Iraq is not working well enough or fast enough."
Existence of the classified memo was first reported by The New York Times on its Internet site Saturday evening in a story for the paper's Sunday editions.

Pentagon press secretary Eric Ruff said he was not the source of the leak to the Times, but confirmed the memo's authenticity to The Associated Press late Saturday. "The formulation of these ideas evolved over a period of several weeks," Ruff said in a telephone interview.

He said the options presented in the paper were Rumsfeld's personal ideas developed in conversations with a variety of people, not part of a formal Pentagon review that also is under way.

1. If they had an ounce of integrity, his whole cabinet would resign.
Of course, Condi wouldn't be able to bear the loneliness. I wonder what she's going to do when his term is up. Maybe she's concocting some way to circumvent the Constitution, like a huge terrorist attack and the implementation of martial law.

5. Bush isn't just incompetent, he's crazy
Bush isn't just incompetent, he's crazy. This doesn't absolve Rummy of doing anything wrong, of course, but it's so far beyond any kind of rational explanation that it can only be insanity.

9. Did Rumsfeld get fired because he wrote the letter, or did he write the
letter because he got fired?

4. I call Bullshit...He knew he was gonna get fired and wrote this as cover
He may have even had permission to write a 'cover' letter describing how he wished things were different, to aid his legacy.

I am just waiting for Bush to get a Medal of Freedom or some such for Rummy soon.

The political reality is that Bush has to kiss the ass of even those he has to fire because he is so dependent on loyal servants shutting up about just how fucking stupid and corrupt the administration is.

What is most striking is that if Bush compliments your job, gives you a nickname and then guarrantees he'll keep you around, you better get that resume dusted off and interview suit cleaned.

7. Your BS detector is funtioning perfectly
Rummy wrote this only as a CYA for posterity (posteriorty?) since he knew he was about to get "canned". Does anyone really believe he would have been fired and would have wrote this memo if the republicans still controlled congress?

8. i dont believe any story that comes from this white house.
i still think rumsfeld saw the writing on the wall when the election went blue and told them he was out.
i think rove has spun the rest to try to make bush look like a decisive leader that controls the situation.
rumsfeld may have written a 'nov 6' memo or maybe he didnt. i dont trust any of it to be factual. they are liars.
proven liars. compulsive, reactionary liars.
