"Elections are not mandates. Elections are power being loaned to politicians for a two-year period by the voters of this country," Dean said. "Now it's our job to earn it back again in '08."
That approach is critical if Democrats are to build on their majority in Congress and retake the White House in 2008, said Dean, who said Democrats did well in November because they appealed to all types of voters.
"George Bush made a huge mistake by representing half of America, while treating the rest of us with contempt," Dean said. "We need to reach out to everybody whether they agree with us or not."
I agree. If we work on kitchen table issues while the GOP attempts to push an agenda to try and recapture/reinvigorate the social conservative base, it will look like they are pandering.
Make college more affordable.
Take incremental though signigicant steps toward Universal Health Care
Stop delaying hard choices on Social Security
Take majoritarian views to undercut the GOP in '08. Force them to go to the right if they are going to not cooperate.
Do significant oversight and investigation designed to humiliate the GOP (IMHO, unless there is a majoritatian grass roots call for impeachment, it should not happen.
We need to understand that while the majority of americans are liberal on the issues. that that does not necessarily translate into support for liberal solutions. Our house majority is slim and very diverse. We need to get things accomplished and that does not happen without significant party discipine and being able to speak with one voice.
