During the raid, which took place late on Saturday night in Gharmah, a town between Baghdad and the restive city of Fallujah, US forces decided that the best way to deal with the target building — described as a known insurgent hideout — was to call in an airstrike.
“Coalition forces determined that the use of precision fires against thebuilding provided the greatest safety measures for both the surroundingresidents and friendly forces by avoiding the possibility of stray smallarms rounds during a firefight,” said the statement.
While the surrounding residents were spared stray bullets, the two women and child in the house, were caught by the air strike and killed, along with five other men.
