I watched "The Hunting of the President" last night.
Sadly, I admit I was politically complacent from 1980-2002. I didn't vote for candidates, only local issues. I didn't know much about Whitewater or Monica, but I knew enough to know it was a witch hunt & that the USA must look totally bat-shit crazy to the rest of the world, relentlessly pursuing a president for a consensual sex act. :eyes: But I had no idea it was as bad as it was. Holy shit. These same people now call out anyone against boosh & express dismay at how much we dislike/hate him, forgetting their eight year inquisition of Clinton. They are such fucking hypocrites.

Even though media consolidation began before that, the one thing that hit me hardest was how low the media sunk during this time. Any reporter who wanted to pursue truth over fairy tales was called a Clinton democrat or a Clinton apologist. It seems this was the time they stopped being journalists & became corporate mouthpieces. And it's just gotten worse.

For those, who like me, were not paying attention during this time, I recommend this movie.

1. That's why I say our Dems aren't being swiftboated, they're being impeachmented
because it didn't start with 2004. It was going on for a long time before, and the media was completely complicit in the impeachmentment of Clinton. Then they impeachmented Gore. Then impeachmented the Dixie Chicks. Then impeachmented Dan Rather. Then impeachmented Kerry.

All for a pile of BULLSHIT fabrications and spin concocted by the GOP and its complicit mediawhores in the corporate media.

Funny how media wouldn't even mention the actual impeachable offense Clinton DID commit - covering up for Bush1's crimes of office.

3. For those of us old enough to remember the horrors that happened in
the sixties (and I am sure that even-older DUers can remember shit from the 50's and earlier), the repuke playbook has really not changed much over the decades.

Know your enemy is advice well-heeded if we are to survive.

4. That's a movie I wish was better than it is

Because I totally agree with the argument - but the movie itself has some unfocused and even cheesy segments.

8. you got it, CrispyQGirl
Clinton's favorable ratings remained high because people became more sickened by the witch hunt than they did by Clinton's reckless personal behavior in office. The repukes were guilty of the most low-down, sickening tactics EVER and yes it seemed like all news shows became strictly tabloid fodder - this continued through to their obsession with Gary Condit - it took 9/11 to break their breathless hold on the outrageous.

9. I'll put it on my netflix list
I missed it in the theaters, although I had followed Lyons and Conason closely during the time they were preparing the book. Those two reporters are a primary reason Clinton was saved. Larry Flynt deserves most of the credit, but they were instrumental as well.

11. I made the mistake of watching it before bedtime......
I was so pissed I couldn't sleep. I was in the same boat as you as far as being somewhat clueless in the nineties even though I saw impeachment as the rethugs wanting to overturn an election they couldn't win.

12. If you haven't read the book, please do so
You'll need a scorecard to keep up with how many screwballs and right-wingers did everything in their God-given power to undermine former President Clinton.

13. Should be required viewing for all Americans.
Every time I hear a Republican decry the lack of civility in our politics today, I point out how their Party has abused their oversight of Clinton. Filegate, Whitewater, Travelgate, Christmascardgate were all bogus investigations. It's amazing Clinton accomplished what he did in 8 years and did as well as did dealing with terrorism, given the fact that Republicans opposed every action from Clinton's administration.
