John Bolton....the gift that keeps on giving
So of course one of the main news items today is John Bolton resigning from his appointment as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Bolton will step down after his recess appointment ends.

I'm almost sorry to see Bolton go, and it's NOT because he's been an effective ambassador working on behalf of U.S. interests. I'm sorry to see him go because he gives us bloggers such good material to work with!

The folks over at Talking Points Memo have a very interesting read on something that Bolton has done on his way out the door of the U.N.

Next year will mark 200 years since the abolishment of the transatlantic slave trade. To that end, several Carribean nations proposed a resolution that commemorates this wonderful anniversary. But leave it to John Bolton. Originally, he refused to sign on to the resolution.

So what is exactly is Bolton's problem with using a resolution to celebrate the end of the transatlantic slave trade? Apparently, he wanted to change some language in the resolution. He wanted "emphasizing" changed to "the emphasis." Huh? So because he has a problem with the word "emphasizing," he was prepared to not sign this historic resolution?

It seems as though Bolton changed his mind about not signing the resolution, after members of the Congressional Black Caucus spoke up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Congressional Black Caucus IS the conscience of the United States Congress!

1. CBC PROBABLY let Bolton/Bush/Rove know they had them...
by the short hairs... To not sign such a resolution would be a slap in the face to all African Americans and one so serious that the PuGs would be lucky just to get JC Watts vote in the future...

I detest that jerk, Bolton, but I worry what nefarious shit he'll turn up doing in the future...

2. I've said it once and I'll say it again
African Americans are the conscience of this country. If Black folks think something is wrong, we should think long and hard about it because they're most likely correct.

3. The rats are all jumping off this sinking ship
Right about now, dim son frat boy wishes he could get off the thing.

Let's make this the most miserable 777 days, 13 hours, and 47 minutes of his life.

4. Well, as an African-American myself, I thank you for that.
I think you are so correct about the African-American community being the conscience of the country.

And I think the reason for that is simple: by and large, we realize American is not as good as its promise.

We love our country, and because we do, we are determined to help America reach its highest ideals. We know what this country is capable of doing and being.

5. I agree with all you say
African-Americans have been subjected to so much over hundreds of years that they have developed a way to see things for what they really are. Long before 40 acres and a mule they were being lied to and AA's recognize deception and spin when its happening. It wasn't a rich white man that invented the phrase "it is what it is". A rich white man is rarely that pragmatic when it comes to the hardships in life. Sometimes a poor white man can develop that kind of insight when under the same unfortunate circumstances AA's have had to endure as a class.

This coming from an (unfortunately sometimes) white man.
