My biz landlord accused me of warring against Christmas when I wished him "happy holidays".
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 12:00 AM by Mika
He replied "Merry Christmas. Are you a Christian?", I replied "would you not wish me a Merry Christmas if I wasn't?", he responded "well, some people say that there is a war against saying Merry Christmas at this time of year".

I told him that I wish goodwill to all people of all religions or none and that, to me, "happy holidays" reflects that goodwill to all people who do observe holy days at this time of year.

I asked "does that sound like I am waging war against Christmas?", he replied "I guess not".

I said "I think you watch too much Fox news" and as I handed him my rent check for the month I repeated "happy holy days". He smiled and we shook hands.

Faux news watchin', Bush lovin' a-hole.

1. I say, "I'm not excluding Christians, I'm including everyone."
"I mean, do you WANT to be MISERABLE during Kwanza and Hanukah?"

It sounds like you brought him down off the "war on Christmas" ledge.

Of couse, the fact that you are a good tenant who pays the rent on time probably helped. :D

5. The whole premise is stupidly false. It' like wishing somone a good day
and having them complain you wish them ill every other day by default.

7. You did a lot better than me
I'm so fuckin tired of this "war on christmas" bullshit, I'm ready to cold cock the next family member who relates an allegedly true story of how his kids were forced to sing kwanza songs at school and forbidden to utter the word christmas. I've heard this now from a couple of nephews and nieces and every story sounds the same even though they all attend different schools. One of em even had the balls to preface his story with the tired old faux cliche "some people say there's a war on christmas". If he'd called me a secular progressive I think I might have decked him on the spot.

8. How about saying....
"Happy Holidays" refers to Christmas AND the New Year. Don't you want BOTH to be happy?

10. Here's the deal: Christmas + New Year's = HolidayS
for Christians, so what's the problem anyway?

I've said Happy Holidays in a generic way, so as not to exclude anyone, but REALLY -- doesn't it include New Year's Day as well?

11. I think that's really the origin
of saying "happy holidays" this time of year. It predates political correctness by decades at least.

12. especially in the US, where it's Thanksgiving + Christmas + New Year's
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 04:05 PM by Lisa
All falling within a few weeks of each other. I suppose some ultra-devout Christians might have a problem with mixing two mainly-secular holidays in -- but unless they are from Orthodox sects and follow the old-style calendar rigorously, one would hope that they know enough religious history to be aware that Dec 25th wasn't the big deal it's become in modern consumer society. (And isn't Easter supposed to be far more important to Christianity, anyway?)

In fact, some sects, like the Puritans, would forbid decorations and festivities, because they were basically pagan. If people are going to act like Puritans, it's hypocritical for them to get all huffy when someone refuses to get caught up in Christmas fever.

16. Brazilian holiday cards say "Boas Festas" since, well, forever.
Literally, "Good Festivities," roughly the same as "Happy Holidays."

15. I don't know why people want to say "Merry Christmas" all month anyway.
I usually try to keep "Merry Christmas" for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Personally, for all month long, I like Season's Greetings, but that sounds pretty silly when given as a verbal greeting. Happy Holidays is fine. Who ARE these people that get bent out of shape and "offended" over this? Do they really want to be wished a Merry Christmas by someone they bullied, badgered, or shamed into saying it? That "Merry Christmas" should be on everyone's lips or they are considered "against" Christmas is the height of arrogance.

21. I have actually told someone that I don't see the point in wishing Merry Christmas
in fucking November.

Using those words. Because they took offense to me saying "have a happy holiday" two days before Thanksgiving, when I was talking about Thanksgiving.

Honestly. If its not December 20th at least, why even wish Merry Christmas?

Do I tell people "happy birthday" three weeks before their birthday?

22. Good work, Mika!
He was just regurgitating what he had heard on Faux, and you made him stop and think about it. AND you left him with a smile.

Who knows, maybe the next ridiculous meme will sound silly to him if he thinks about it.
