Fed court to hear 'landmark torture case' against Rumsfeld

RAW STORY
Published: Monday December 4, 2006

In a press release issued today, the American Civil Liberties Union announces that a "landmark" case against Donald Rumsfeld will be heard in federal court this week.

The ACLU and another legal rights organization, Human Rights First, are to appear in court here on Friday "to argue that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is directly responsible for the torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. military custody," said the release.

"The hearing will be the first time a federal court will consider whether top U.S. officials can be held legally accountable for the torture scandal in Iraq and Afghanistan," the release continues, adding that the lawsuit was first filed in 2005 "on behalf of nine Iraqi and Afghan former detainees."

The men were reportedly held in U.S. detention where the ACLU asserts that "they were subjected to abuse, torture ... cruel and degrading treatment, including severe and repeated beatings, cutting with knives, sexual humiliation and assault, mock executions," and threats of death, among other things. "None of the men was ever charged with a crime," the release says, and "all have been released."

1. Good first step.
All the Bush Crime Family war criminals should be turned over to the Hague for prosecution and punishment.

2. I was hoping we'd extradite Rumsfeld to Germany where another trial is occurring.
It would be poetic justice if the court trial in Germany is held at Nuremberg.

3. Those that oppose the far right should support the ACLU!
Like the Democrats are the best line of defense against the far right at the ballot box, the ACLU fights against the far right in the Courts! (They actually fight for the Bill of Rights, but that's pretty much the same thing!)

8. Like Rush Limpballs! He used the ACLU when he needed them in his "Medical Records" case
after he was caught sending his housekeeper out to the streets to cop some Oxycontin for him. Oh yeah. They badmouth the ACLU, but where do they go when they REALLY need help? The ACLU! They're all a bunch of low-life hypocrites.

7. No. The ACLU is one of the last bastions of nan-partisan organizations
They truly don't care about your politics, but care immensely about your rights. Everyone should support the ACLU.

5. Rumsfeld isn't going to like this.
On July 21, 2006, then-Secretary Rumsfeld reasserted his argument that he is immune from responsibility for acts of torture and abuse committed under his watch.

All of this is tied in. How long will the government cry "National Security!" in trying to weasel out of these incredible crimes?
